Why the pool? Nothing can be achieved in the pool unless you're a novice diver or you are preparing to dive freshwater for the first time. I would suggest a shore dive for those contemplating using doubles for the first time to hone in their skills, trim, and buoyancy.
A pool is generally a geometric shape and filled with water. It should not be confused with a game often played for money on a slate table with sticks and balls.

You can learn to backfin on the surface without any kit using a closed drysuit if that helps
You can swim backwards in a pool using backfinning techniques and no fins. Face goes underwater though, so a short time only.

For the pool, if you use a float you can use that to get a breath before to resume

And I can’t back fin to save my life.
When you come face to face with a giant barracuda inside a wreck, you learn very quickly 🤣

Omg had this exact incident yesterday. I was inside a compartment of the ship.... swam into a dark room, started scanning the room with my light and off to my right there's a ~5ft long barracuda just hovering parallel to me. Staring at me with its sharp teeth on display, wondering WTF I'm doing there. If it wanted to leave that compartment it would be through me. That is scary for sure.

See, I bet that’s what it is. All of us attacking him, and he really just isn’t able to understand context clues. Maybe he just needs some assistance understanding what we’re saying.

You can definitely swim backwards in a pool using backfinning techniques and no fins without having your face go under the water.

How do you do it without a float, asking for a friend 😂
