Mexico is most common, same with some of the guides when bonefishing. Was explained that the captain is typically the only one getting paid, rest are tips. Have they actually told you they are getting paid?

More of my experience is with fishing globally though. Mates and bait guys tend to rely on tips.
Why would I ask anyone if they are being paid. Are you going to ask me if I am paid todo my job?
Bait guys, never seen any of those on a dive boat
Recently had a Liveaboard captain tell us the normal tip is 15 to 20 percent of the full price. Do you agree

No I do not agree. When you already pay several thousand US$ why should I be expected to fork out another thousand or two.

Yes, when I travel I ask about local customs. Was told in Mexico was best to tip each person if possible as if you give it to just one person, they may not distribute it. As I mentioned I have more experience globally fishing, but tipping in countries with tourists endeavors seem to be uniform.

If you don’t like a custom don’t go, I didn’t require people in Japan to take tips, hypocritical to just play one side.

Well this is a diving forum not a fishing forum. Dive guides in Mexico are paid according to my friends who were there in the last few weeks. Being tipped is not a demanded right it is a privilege from those who give tips. I am not against tipping as I do so myself. Usually after my 2 week dive trips in Philippines or Bali I pay for a pig fest with chicken and fish and vegies and salads so that all the dive staff and their family can attend a night out. That way they can also take home food that is not eaten on that night. I feel hungry after doing 40 plus dives in 2 weeks.

Maybe you are narc’d after that many dives. They need you to buy them a night out they probably can’t afford it guiding you for two weeks.

Maybe you are clueless as to how people get narced in the first place. The dive center office staff and their spouses and children don't dive, the boat captain doesn't dive. So you see, I provide for all the staff not just dive guides. Some of the guides are freelance but I still invite them as well. No they cannot afford what it costs to put on a feast as that would in some cases be worth more than a weeks salary for them. They all appreciate having the feast though. It's good party time for all.

A guide doing 20 dives a week makes around double the national wage so they are in fact doing pretty well. That is before cash tips and gifts they are given. A good instructor in the Philippines makes net over US$3500 a month.. they can save US$2500 a month and still live very well. Dive center staff... well that make maybe US$500 a month salary.

All the restaurants that you have been eating did the same?
You should have challenged the bill.
Report it to the Tourist Police.
Never saw service charge in the menu.

Yes, all of the restaurant

Yes. LOL I guess you haven’t been in Phuket recently.

See my receipt, below. They put a line to add for tips too. I left it blank.

As an American who lives in Japan, I feel really weird diving in Okinawa, which has a mixture of Americans and Japanese. Ultimately I feel like if I’m paying nearly 200 dollars for 3 dives in a day, probably that cost includes all the costs and don’t tip on top. Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, I usually tip but probably closer to 5% of the total trip bill. On my first trip I tried to give a 10% tip and was nearly killed by my Thai partner. She said, if you tip that much, the DMs will be making more than a physician.

I wrote there I had lived and worked. I have traveled to over 160 countries including all ASEAN members as part of my previous employment. Perhaps you should not be so quick to decide where I may or may not have traveled to.

In fact when it comes to showing some gratuity it is to my regular dive buddies when we go on our dive vacations together. :)
