Inexpensive way to stay on (or near) the Keys?

I stayed in Homestead multiple times. I recommend "fairway inn", it is clean and when I stayed it looked secure for your car.

That drive back and from the keys is a bummer though. But cannot beat the price. I think it was in the $70 range.

I didn't recall the name of where we stayed, but that was it. We paid ~ $50/night for a week - timing matters with pricing of course - and as you say, it was clean and we had no issues or fears with security.
 
Fiesta Key used to have a KOA with tent camping. We always stayed there while in college. (These days I only camp at sites that rhyme with Arriott.) I think they've made some changes and tent sites may be gone. Worth checking because it's easy to get to Key Largo and Islamorada....Marathon isn't too far away. Great location, beach and pool. Have fun!!!
