Has anyone else found that their Halcyon single tank cam buckle bands scratch/gouge their tanks?

I had heard from someone at Halcyon that they had "recently" changed something on the buckle. When I asked how one would identify this change he said he did not know nor did he know when this change was made. (Is there really an improved cam buckle band?).

Are there "better" cam bands? (ones that hold well and don't scratch/gouge?).

Thanks!

Halcyon cam buckles are a royal waste of money. They've been digging into my E8-130's since the first day I got them. Thank God there's idiots out there who will buy anything by Halcyon on eBay...

Too easy. Keep trap shut. Too easy. Keep trap shut.

OK.

If you're diving a Purple or Pink or Blue Al80 your issues aren't cam buckles. You need to return that thing to Sport Diver Magazine - they have yet another cover to shoot.

If you're diving a steel tank (a real galv steel, not that painted nonsense) then you also have no issue.

Tanks come in one color - dull gray.

Approaching 200 dives with mine and there has been no structural damage to my galv tanks. None.

They are not recommended for painted tanks or those jujyfruit Al80's. They will scratch. You may want to consider a few layers of duct tape under the offending area. If you have a real galv tank, forget about it - its fine.

If you want to unload them, PM me. I have many, many people that will gladly trade you their plastic buckle versions for the SS ones.

Or Halcyon could just make a better camband. Is there a BENEFIT to getting your tank all scratched up? If no, that makes it defective in my book, even if only cosmetically. My scubapro buckles are SS and they don't have this problem, why does Halcyon?

FYI there's a much more spirited discussion (with solutions!) on the deco stop message boards.

I gotta agree with Archman, structural damage or not, I don't want my cam bands messing up my tank, maybe I like my sparkly purple AL80!!!

Seriously though, Dive Rite cam bands with metal cams come with a rubber thingy sewn onto them (the kind on duffle bag shoulder straps) and my tanks are no worse for the wear (brushed AL80s or 104s).

Uncle Pug:
Anyone worried about their tank getting scratched is a girlyman sissyface.

Nuts! Uncle Pug has found me out! I'm so ashamed...

This is another long-term niggling Halcyon "issue" that irritates some folks like a burr under their saddle. It doesn't really matter except that we expect more from them, right? There appear to be three possible solutions:
  • Switch to plastic buckles and hope that they don't break.
  • Switch to ScubaPro buckles and hope that they work better.
  • Suck it up.
I went with Plan "B" and haven't had any regrets but Plan "C" would seem fairly reasonable, too.
