Johnny .. I thought you had "Don't Eat Me" on your fins? :D

I don't think we're going to convince jbd that just joining an organization that supports diving would be good idea, even without getting any insurance

I have the DAN sticker on all my tanks, only use my tanks when diving unless I am out training or out on a call with the dive team then I use the County's tanks.

Is the id tag a good idea, yes will I buy one and wear it no, personal preference I guess, anyways if my dive does go south and Mr. Murphy hitches a ride my remains will be readily identifyable by my "pink speedo I wear under my wetsuit".............

JBD, with all due respect, I think you're full of caca...
I also know from past experience that the person at DAN that answers the phone is not going to be able to tell you much more than to follow recognized first aid protocols and transport to the nearest hospital and or chamber facility. They can't do much more than this because they are most likely talking to a lay person who does not have the training and experience to make a full on medical assessment of the patient.
I have spoken to Dive Doctors myself at the weekend DAN hotline.

And even with your self saving approach, the best care comes with the attending physician consulting with the experts and DAN and Duke U.

You have every right to dive foolishly without insurance, but you send a poor message to students and newbies with your arguments.

I do not hope to change your mind, but I was these statements here for those who read this.

Still working on a paint/pen that sticks and lasts more than a few dives. Working on it, though.
The silver paint-pen did best so far -

All good and sound ideas except for one...

Ever heard of unexpected hit? Even known a diver who had one, had to be medevaced back to the states and spent weeks in ICU?

My opinion is that if one will not carry DAN insurance, they should never go to sea.

Yeah, but he is going out of country to dive and he is teaching students.
Yes I have heard of the "unexpected hits". Some are related to undiagnosed PFO's some are IMO the results of poor diving skills or practices if you will. Many of these we will never know for sure why they happened because there isn't sufficient or complete information about the dive profile. There is much more to it than just the time and the depth. There are threads on scubaboard in which folks who have had an undeserved hit said they were within limits. These limits are always depth and time. What we don't know in most cases is actual profile second by second. We don't know what rates of ascent occurred at any phase of the dive. There is just too much information that is not known. My suspicion is that there was something wrong with the profile, possibly coupled with other risk factors.

Yes I have heard and read about people being medevaced back to the States and spending time in chambers and ICU's etc, etc. Having DAN insurance will not stop one from being injured, just like having auto insurance does not stop wrecks from happening.

And of course, we all have opinions and we all think our opinion is the correct one---its what makes life interesting.:lotsalove:

I'm outta here for now. I have a 17 hour road trip coming up in less than four hours and need some rest/sleep.

Hey Don. I will admit no excuses here that I answered no. I didn't know they had them. I'll have to get one. I have written down my Membership number on a release but, I see how the tag would be faster acess to the infomation. If I got seperated from my BC??? Maybe a DAN tatoo on my neck/head??

No offense, y'all but I'm not reading this whole thread.

I just thought I'd point out that there is at least one former member of the board that actually has his DAN number tattooed on him.

No, I'm not lying. Yes, I've seen it with my very own eyeballs.

Beat that! ;)
