In the US it’s spelled without the “o”, becoming edema.

While it’s still not well known, that is gradually changing.

DAN has been studying it recently, and there are a few threads here on ScubaBoard.

I came across this story today.
Divers need to know when to abort: inquest | SBS World News

I was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this problem and how common it is. The article didn't say much about the details other than if you have trouble breathing end the dive.

There's an article on the front page of SCUBABoard about it. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/content/scuba-training_1/519-diving-immersion-pulmonary-edema.html

The problem with IPE is that it's unpredictable, so nobody can say "Don't do 'x' and you'll be OK"

flots.

We are currently conducting several studies on this subject. It's not 100% predictable but it does tend to reoccur in people who are predisposed to it. It is a mistake to categorize every case of pulmonary edema that occurs in the water as "immersion pulmonary edema" before other causes like cardiac problems are ruled out. However, as Ayisha points out in her article that's linked above, the treatment for pulmonary edema is the same no matter what the etiology.
