After ordering several regs. to compare and based upon performance/price considerations I have narrowed my choices down to either the Zeagel Envoy ($250) or the Sherwood Brut($190) both of which are rated highly and as "best buys".

I also ordered the Mares Proton V42 ($450) but even though I love the small size I can't justify paying that much more plus the 1st. stage (like on my Mares Proton V-16) is very heavy. It's also not "that
much" smaller than the Sherwood Brut. The Zeagle is a bit larger.

Which would you choose (between these 2 please) and why?

Thanks,

Sy

I'd take the Zeagle hands down. Breathes smoother than the Sherwood, and will be a higher performance reg in deeper more demanding dives.

The Brut is a work horse. The design has not changed much since it came out so parts are easy to get and there a few moving parts inside. Service is simple. I have been diving mine for close to 13 years and except for one time that I went to a big box store for service it have worked flawlessly.

FWIW I've been diving a brut for the past 3 years. Its 7 years old now, with the first four of its life being spent teaching college students to dive (ie received minimal, if any, post-dive care), and its still diving pretty well. Its a very common rental/teaching reg because its really hard to mess it up too badly.

This said, had I not had access to a dirt cheap Brut, I would have gone for the Zeagle. The Brut works and can take a beating, but thats about all I can say for it. I don't think you'll find anybody commenting on how well or easily it breathes (especially if you'll be diving in Jersey... mine is noticebly harder to breath in cold, ~50F water). But its reliable and its cheap.

I use the Envoy as my safe second. Breaths as well as my Zeagle DS/V. I'd probably get the Envoy Deluxe, but I wouldn't hesitate to use the Envoy as my main reg and I try to use mine every once in awhile.

The Brut. I have one that is 22 years old (and counting), including 7 years spent stored in my parent's loft whilst I was off living in cold climates (not diving), and it still runs great. The internal workings are so simple that anyone who is remotely mechanically inclined can service their own reg.

Sherwoods are for life.

Go for the envoy (or deluxe). Great, bomb proof reg.
Plus you can move it to a stage bottle/slung pony down the track when you want to buy bigger, better regs (zeagle flathead xp for example... i love mine)

Sports Chalet have a special this month on the Sherwood Oasis for $219.
It is just as bomb proof as the rest of the Sherwood regulator line but IMHO is a better breather than the Brut. It is their suggested warm water reg. but shares much of it's internals with the Blizzard (1 of the best cold water regs) The difference is a teflon coating on a couple of parts. If the Brut was on your short list at this price the Oasis should be considered.

I use the Envoy for my safe second as well with my Flathead IV /ZX primary. I love how easy it breathes. Top Notch!:D
