I think a better question is why you are trying to fully inflate a 16' smb from depth?
Which closely aligns with my next question of why would you buy a 16' smb?

That thing is ridiculous. I've played with the ten footers, which suck. Can't imagine this thing. I suspect that your difficulties will diminish greatly if you get dsmb that is designed for the real world.

Now I'm not saying I've never wanted to have a bigger dsmb, but after years of women reassuring me that my dsmb was adequate, I settled and accepted my DSMB size. Ofcourse I've thought of getting a bigger dsmb, but then I realise, it's not how nature intended it.
Although sometimes I do regret having gotten the stupid AP Diving logo tattoo'd on my dsmb.

Long story short:
it's just about the amount of air you put into it and depth you deploy them.

Although for someone like you it will be alot more work to get your dsmb standing proud.

In all seriousness though:
Even for North Sea diving a DSMB of 2m max is usually more than plenty, so 16 foot which is more than double seems a bit 'excessive'.
If you can't get the dsmb up, what's the point in the end? Just return it tbh and get one half the size.

These ridonculous dsmb's are usually bought as gadgets or used to pose with a boat shows. They're not very useful in my opinion.

Did you ask someone on a boat whether it was standing when you deployed it?

I was wondering if this would stand upright while you do your stop.

For its size it might need two people to deploy if you want to get more air into it at depth. Have your buddy hold the finger spool while you purge a reg in the bottom or hit it with your LP inflator. It'll still take off on you before it's full. For it's size with that much lift there's no way you can get it full while at depth. Once you get to the surface you can use your LP hose to fill it the rest of the way. I can get two blows into a DSMB before it starts pulling me up if I'm neutral and not holding something. Once I get to the surface I'll hit it with my LP inflator to fill it the rest of the way.

Seems like for it's size though it'll make for too much to get tangled in. Heck, at a 15' stop the top would be hitting the surface while your're still at 15' with the still loose bottom end. When you do get to the surface I'd image you'd have all that loose DSMB floating around like a neon jellyfish, inevitably wrapping around you. I don't see how it'd be very manageable. It seems like it would be better suited as a towed surface marker you'd simply inflate before the dive.

That DSMB is giant. To get that massive tube full you'll need to be filling it 1/4 full at 30m or 1/5th full at 35m.

If you want a DSMB to shoot from 10m get something smaller
