My choices
#1 Bonaire
#2 Roatan/Utilla Coco view Utilla lodge I think has a 2 week 2 resort deal advertised somewhere.

Mac, how do you get to that Columbian island? Getting to Columbia from the ABC islands is pretty easy so I might check it out...:)

Check out the link I posted www.siriushotel.net

They describe how to get there and you can find the island on the google earth tool the integrated on the website.

You have to fly to San Andres Island from any city in Colombia, also from Panama City or Canada possible. Afterwards its a 15 minute flight from San Andres Island to the precious paradise island of Providenica.

It sounds a bit complecated but If I can do it everybody can! :D

Why nor try Guanaja if you want places where divers do not usually go ....they have loads of dive sites some of them are incredible . I was diving there a week ago Black rock was incredible . If you are in roatan you can go by boat one day . Contact clearwater paradise George at :504 3303 7444

I suggest diving Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and the cenotes (Mexico), I was there in 1997, was a perfect trip. Cave diving can be done without being an specialist if you go with a group and an instructor, itŽ´s an amazing experience. Yucatan area has the perfect balance between a cultural trip -due to mayan ruins- and nice diving, Tulum has also amazing beaches. Stayed for 15 days, renting a car is a good idea, using free roads allows knowing not-for-tourists mayan life, also very cheap and safe in 97. Good luck

Times have changed a lot since 1997 on the mainland. Drug killings means roadblocks are everywhere. Cars are $100 a day to rent (insurance, taxes, rental & gas). Mayan Ruins are crowded, if you can find a parking spot, as of Dec 2008. When we dove Cozumel 2006, the different dive shops did just enough to avoid being sued, but never enough that we thought...what a great vacation. One time, the dive boat dropped off onshore because "the Coast Guard" ordered all boats off the water. We had to hike to the main road & flag down a taxi to get back to our hotel....in wet scuba gear. The DM asked us if we wanted to dive the next day.
We wondered what planet he was from

Did he pass the tip jar before they dropped you off?

That has to be one of the worst customer service stories that I've heard. I keep telling my wife that I get enough of Mexico traveling there on buisness. I think I'll just go back to Roatan or Bonaire (depending on time of year).

Journalist for every dive publication nearly run out of superlatives describing the underwater beauty of the pinnacles, colors and species experienced in Dominica. Sure, it may be a trek to get to Dominica from a lot of places in the U.S., but it is definitely worth the effort. Dominica is the final frontier of Caribbean diving, unsullied, untrammeled, and unaltered the original Caribbean. Topside, Dominica is one of the most beautiful places on earth and will keep even the most avid diver out of the water for a part of the time. Like Dennis Miller says "That's my opinion...but I could be wrong." Why don't you form your own opinion and come join me in Dominica at the beginning of August and again in mid-November.

:)Dominica is one drop dead beautiful island. I was there a number of years ago before it seemed to have gotten on the radar following the Pirate of the Caribbean movie being made there but it is very very poor. I agree that Bonaire is always a top pick and for my tastes Saba is very top notch diving. You get the topside beauty of Dominica without the poverty. Saba is one of the cleanest islands I've ever been on, very laid back and big animals on the pinnacles. Maybe not as big as the sperm whales I snorkeled with on Dominica but I hear they don't do that as much anymore. I can't guarantee you'll be surrounded by a pod of 50 dolphins like we were on our last trip to Saba but I can guarantee you'll see some big old sharks on the pinnacles. Plenty of non pinnacle dives too if you aren't into the deeper stuff.:D

While not technically in the Caribbean, Cozumel would be my choice. The variety of dive sites and the quality of diving is excellent. Coz offers wall diving, reef diving, and swim throughs. It has it all. They have a variety of resorts to fit any budget and there are above water activities as well. I have been to Coz 4 times and have always used Bay Adventures :: Dive Adventures and Island Vacations :: 888.599.3483 as my travel agent. The prices they offer are great and the service is great as well. I also suggest going to Reviews of vacations, hotels, resorts, vacation and travel packages - TripAdvisor to read reviews on the resorts in Coz (you can get reviews on almost anyplace in the world there). I always check places out on tripadvisor before booking a trip. Here is a link to the resorts and hotels on Coz Cozumel Hotels: Read Cozumel Hotel Reviews and Compare Prices - TripAdvisor. Just click on any hotel in the window to the left and read the reviews. We always use Adventure Discovery as our dive op. Luis gives personalized service and is very safety conscious. Here is a link to his website Cozumel - Cozumel Diving / Cozumel Dive Shops / Adventure Discovery - Luis Cabañas.

However, since you say "if you could dive anywhere" I would say Fiji!!!!. We stayed at Beqa Lagoon Resort for 10 days and absolutely loved it. The colors and variety of coral and reef fish were amazing . The color really blew me away. Plus, they offer the best shark dives I have been on. Its the only shark dive I've been on where we saw 6 different sharks on the same dive.

Just my thoughts,

Regards,

Bill
