You're right. They do make a mess. But they shoot really well and the price is right. I don't mind cleaning guns. I generally clean after every trip to the range anyway.

Barrett 50cal
Hey, thanks. I'd take that bet any day.

I have a Barrett bull pup and bought it after shooting a buddy's M82 (now that there's a real man's gun) and you can shoot either one offhand, so long as you're big enough and prepared. I don't shoot mine often enough but, if I did, I'd sell it and buy an M82. Should have done that in the first place, just to own one. Not a more awesome piece to be had, IMO.

The best part--well, one of the best parts--about those guns is the Barrett builds one hell of a muzzle brake for them. It'll still leave a mark if you don't shoot one for a living, but it's a really well-designed piece.

Since the bullpup is no longer being manufactured you have an excellent collector's items now. $$$$$

With "that" Mosin or any Mosin at 500+ yards?
Must be possible. If we can shoot a Black Powder Muzzle Loader at up to 1000 yards with peep sights then I am sure that a good condition Mosin with properly loaded ammunition should be able to do it.

I've heard they are very good a long range shooting. Was just curious.

The Mosin is not that common is South Africa so it is difficult to really comment but the 303 Lee-Enfields are common and they are also reputed to be inaccurate yet some of the competitors shooting with me have shot some unbelievable scores with original Lee-Enfields. As with a Muzzle loader you need to spend a lot of time to get the ideal load combination that works for your specific gun and then to shoot that gun a lot to get to know the gun.

As for muzzle loaders. I am a member of the MLAIC as well as the BPSU in South Africa. BPSU.

We use both original caplock muzzle loader target rifles dating from the 1860s or replicas of those rifles to compete from 300, 500, 600, 800 and 900 meters and in the UK and USA 400, 600, 700, 900 and 1000 yards. The rules are that we need to compete in the "spirit of the original" which means we are limited to rifles which are originals or very close facsimiles, the same bullet designs, sights etc. and must use real Black Powder. Although these rifles aren't capable of similar accuracy to modern rifles it is amazing how accurate they can be.

Sorry gents, I wasn't questioning the ability of the (7.62x54) Mosin to shoot to 600+ yards. I was asking if it was his or a specific rifle.

i regularly shoot at a distance out to 1000 yards. I have a lot of time behind the trigger shoot at distance with a variety of vintage WWI and WWII rifles. The Mosin is more than capible of routinely hitting a man size target out to 600 yards.

The only real limiting factors of this rifle at distance is the trigger pule, rear ladder type sights and check weld once the ladder sights are raised high enough to get a sight picker at 600 yards plus.

The 7.62x54 is very close to the ballistic of a 30.06. It shoots very well with match loads.

There's only one club within a 100 miles that has a 600 yard range. Sadly I am no longer a member. Have taken to handguns because indoor ranges are relatively abundant. I need to take some lessons to develop some skill.

Nice shooting!

I guess I have always underestimated the potential accuracy of a muzzle loader. I never shot mine a lot, and couldn't even qualify to watch you shoot! Wow!

I did only one local black powder meet, just for fun and was way out shot by a couple of guys, but we had a ball!

I just have a simple reproduction Hawkins 50 that shoots a patched ball. Pretty good for local hunting. A friend was visiting me once, and I got the gun out to show him, so he asked just how accurate it was, so I sighted on an old sign hanging @140 yards away. Hit it dead center on the first shot. He tried and tried to hit the target but failed, and he was a pretty exceptional shot with a rifle.
He decided that I was an exceptional shot too, but I doubt that I could have repeated that shot. Sometimes you just get lucky, and anything else you do after that will only expose the fact that it WAS just a lucky shot! I just smiled and put the gun away, rather than expose myself. :D
