Elk were not originally mountain animals. There is a herd out in the desert of Wyoming that has a heard of elk. If you want to see elk go to the elk refuge outside of Jackson Hole Wyoming. Your trigger finger will start twitching all on it's own just looking around.

The reintroduction of wolves was controversial.

An elk hunt is a bucket list item for sure. Along with a great desire to take a pronghorn. Probably never happen but a girl can dream.

We had four in our back yard last week. They usually come around at night, but these were pretty bold. The Kimbers will get fired. I'm anxious to do so, but have been a slacker about scheduling time. I'm actually a little nervous about using one as a carry. The trigger is super light, so once the safety is off you'd best be prepared to shoot something. The Glock two stage triggers are a little more predictable.

I've been carrying an Ultra CDP II for about a half doz years or so. It's a very nice pistol, eminently safe, more mechanically repeatable trigger than a Glock (if easier to pull). I alternate with a couple of XDs. And a Rhino for kicks...

If I liked Glocks I might concider that. I really cannot stand them though, the grip angle is all wrong for me and I can't hit the broad side of a barn with one. They just feel "wrong" in the hand. I do like the Springfield XDS though...... but then again I have been looking for a .357/.38 lever gun (VERY hard to find around here), or mebbe a .22mag rifle. or I could spend it all on ammo. Decisions, decisions....

I'm convinced I have very similar hands to John Browning as my favorite grips are the 1911 & the Hi Power. I don't much like the Glock ergos either.

Not to brag, but been there and done that. Growing up in NW Colorado and living in WY has it's privileges. Elk hunts were a lot more work than Mule Deer. Antelope was not big deal. I feel privileged to have grown up in that era and area.

You should plan it and do it. There really is nothing like it. The only thing I regret is not ever drawing a moose tag.

I have a 7MM mag, Remington 700 BDL I bought for an elk hunt 13 years ago. The rifle has never been fired. Life seems to get in the way a lot.

Do it while you are physically capable, elk hunts can be a whole lot of work.

That is indeed a worry. I am not the greatest physical specimen, I have heard that elk will kick your butt if you are not in great shape. Not a fat slob by any stretch but definitely not acclimated to altitude and especially with a pack. Would probably have to drop about 20lbs and train for a few months before any attempt. I have three stents already and am a type 2 diabetic, with bad knees, so the elk is more than likely a diminishing dream. The pronghorn is probably much more doable, I had a semi plan for one, even bought a .25/06 as a pronghorn rifle. Plans fell through though, like you said life has a funny way of changing your plans.

Dunno what I would use for the elk gun. .30/06, .270, .45/70, .308 (already have) or buy a 300 or 7mm just because.

I think the 7MM would be the best choice. The 06 or the 308 would suffice. The 270 IMO is a waste for Elk. The 300 Mag would work too. But all of that is just personal opinion. I have seen people use all of them and be successful. I chose the 7MM because I wanted one.:D

And that is why you don't rag me about not having shot the Kimber yet. :D

We saw lots of elk, pronghorn, buffalo, and a moose on our drive down from Fairbanks. I don't think I'm tough enough for elk hunts, or sheep. Shooting from mountain top to mountain top, then having to retrieve them is more work than I'm willing/capable of doing. Mule deer or pronghorn would be a treat. A long shot on the rolling plains would be challenge enough. My 270 would probably suffice, with better optics, a bi-pod or some sticks, and a better shooter :D

I never nag or rag anybody. Just askin:D

I have a friend that has completed his grand slam. Big Horn, Dahl, Stone and Desert Sheep. It took him a long time to get all that done. While he was at it he got caribou, wolverine, wolf and a few others. The taxidermists loved him.

The elk are easier to get if you know someone with horses.:D I have always thought the 270 was a good caliber. Quite a few of the hunters I know like it. For what ever reason I always thought the 06 was a great gun too.

This isn't the PUB and I'm not trying to start a political debate, but I found this article interesting.

Last month I bought my first center fire rifle. It was also a milsurp. Loved the whole process of learning about the rifle. Loved shooting it.

Last week I applied for my Curios and Relics FFL...........I think my vintage double hose scuba collection will be on the back burner.....maybe not, I snagged a Viking beer can a couple of days ago.
