Somewhere, I have pix of Playa del Carmen, before it was developed. It was NOT many years ago, either. I remember the first time I heard the term, Mexican Riviera ." I asked, " Where in Mexico is that ?" Turned out I had been there many times.
Back then, Playa had almost all dirt streets. You got out at the bus stop, in a small store, at the top of the hill & walked down to the ferry. Very small tin roof homes were on the right & a few bars , a tiny motel, was on the left. If you went several blocks N. of the ferry, you could eat breakfast, outside at a small cafe. They spoke no English, but had their small menu in English. You just pointed at the meal you wanted. A big American breakfast was $1-2. Beachfront rooms in that area were $15-20.

thank you for all your tales! I'm stuck here at work and you are brightening my days!!! :D:popcorn:

Mary, sounds like you found Om Bar. (There's an Om in Tulum a well) Also the "Little Italy" section.

Lots of good Playa information here, including a good selection of restaurant and bar listings. Playa del Carmen News,Real Estate,Tours,Golf,Hotels,Restaurants,Nightlife - Playa Maya News,Playa del Carmen,Mexico

Playa is very international and has lots variety and no shortage of interesting. It's rarely as quiet as you're currently seeing. ENJOY IT!!!! (Last time I saw it that quiet was a couple months after Wilma in '05) Normally Playa is wall to wall people day and night. Busy, traffic, street and beach vendors, locals and tourists going in all directions.

If you like quality chocolate you have to go to Ah Cacao Ah Cacao Real Chocolate - Welcome ;) Mmmmm!
No, it was not the Om bar...but that was right next door. It looked like the name was Karmabar...but I think it was Kartabar. Anyway....really cool. And any bar called Om...my favorite Hindu word...is alright by me.

I love walking by the restaurant with the see through plexiglass chairs. Very sophisticated.

I took my laundry across the street from Hacienda Real Del Caribe. Cute little laundry mat. The amiga weighed my laundry from a basket hanging by ropes from a scale. It weighed 5.5 kilos and cost me 63 peso for her to wash, dry, fold my laundry. Oh yes...could definitely live here.

Love my hotel by the way!!!

You've never had dinner in Holbox tho. Quite an experience...

You didn't know that knives are prohibited in Mexican dive parks?

Okay...got your knife police hat on now. My knife is anchored to my hose leading to my AIR II. I guess when Raymundo cut himself on it, when he wanted to unsheath it and look at it...that should have been his big clue that he could have told me
"Mary, you are my dive buddy, knives are not allowed in Mexican dive parks"
But...even though blood was flowing and dripping everywhere from his finger for all the dive shop locals to see, not one of them mentioned this fact.

Yep, dove all week with it right there next to my heart!

What can I say.

Gosh...glad I could help out!! It would be nice if I could make a living doing this. It would be right up my alley.

Not sure how many lives I have left though.:eyebrow:

I have many Cabo San Lucas stories I could tell. I think I need to write a book.
Also, was stuck on the island of Elba for over 6 weeks once. Ferried my Honda over and back and had to drive home to Germany with a smashed moon roof and broken toe over the Swiss Alps after paying $1800 for a clutch to be boated in from Florence. Gave me lots of time to get into trouble. But that story would have to be in the sequel.

Okay...got your knife police hat on now.

Hope your trip continues well...

Mary,
Time for your next dose of tequila and lime.
When are you getting here?

With the right approach, I am very ed-u-ma-cat-able.
I'll pick up a new one at Wal-mart.

Lordie, it was only a question. There are many things I don't know about; wondered if you did.
