The feeling is mutual! My brother in law has terminal cancer. He is getting top level care from the Canadian System FREE. My sister will have to cope with the loss of her husband but not a mountain of debt because of his illness. The system took good care of me till I moved over here.

That said here in OZ we have a two tiered system. Public system like Canada where you may have to wait but the wait depends on the severity of your situation. Private system for those who can afford the insurance permiums and additional costs of Private Hospitals. Seems to work well from my experience so far but the Public System is still the foundation.

I am not American so am not qualified to judge your system. I have only heard stories from friends who depleted all their assets and were left in debt because their family member took too long to die.

And I've got stories of Canadians who have come to the US for serious care because the wait was too long in Canada (those that lived close enough or moved here) Eight weeks to start chemo? The system in the US is not perfect, but nationalized healthcare is not the answer. And come on, 4 days to set a fracture? And I can judge the Canadian system to a degree based on the care I couldn't get and I was paying cash.

Very nice Canadian gentleman from Tobermory told me about his wife that died of breast cancer because she had to wait her turn for treatment. He brought it up, I didn't. How about the age cap on dialysis in the UK? 60 yrs old? That's a crime. No way do I want the gov't standing between me and my doctor. How about my father's urology oncologist from Alberta that moved here so he could practice w/o the gov't telling him what he can and can't do for his patients. He's at a research university and on the cutting edge, something he said he couldn't do in Canada. My father is currently having issues, if he was in Canada, France or the UK, he would be patted on the head and sent home to die. If my brother, who just had a kidney transplant goes into rejection, he would be sent home to die in the UK in another 6 years.

Sorry about your sister and BIL, I wish them comfort. Keep in mind, his care isn't free. Somebody is paying for it.

Oh heavens you people are making me laugh so hard. I tell you...though...I admit I am a bit of a klutz.

I should tell you about the time my own SUV ran me over. I was dressed quite nicely, just returned from a lovely evening at the Theatre (use Proper British accent when pronouncing) I just pulled into my driveway from a 70 mile trip and was in a hurry to go to the bathroom. I forgot the keys in the ignition which I needed to open the front door. I leaned into an akward tilt to grab them out...but had also forgot to put my big mammoth vehicle in park. So, the keys would not budge. Suddenly the car starts to roll backwards on my driveway. Now remember the driver side door is open and now pushing against my body because I am standing outside. I grab the steering wheel which spins and careens me half way under the bottom of the vehicle. In slow motion (which is what seems to happen when I am in shock and realizing I have made a serious blunder) as I futilely try to hang onto the steering wheel which only made matters worse, the car rolls OVER both of my legs and feet I am sure they are crushed. They have to be...a gigantic gas guzzling truck thing runs over them and the blood is splurting out.

It just so happens that in my elegant attire I am also holding my cell phone. So, as I am laying there on my own driveway. I call 911. In the meantime...my car because I have turned the steering wheel. stops going straight down the driveway and turns onto my front lawn...and backs across it far enough where the house is now blocking my vision of the runaway vehicle. I then see it only mere moments later now going forward across my front lawn, my neighbors front lawn, the sidewalk, and on its way down the street. Once again I lose sight of the possessed runaway vehicle and only know of its next destination by the sound of a very large crash and boom as I lay on the driveway with crushed and bleeding legs and feet calmly speaking with 911.

The paramedics, firetruck and police arrive (all three come when you call 911). They take me away in an ambulance and I am rolled into the packed ER looking like I just came from the opera. Of course hours later, waiting through xrays, bandaging, and so forth, I have all the other patients laughing and joking as I tell them the story.

Turns out it looked much worse than it was. No broken bones and no stitches required. However, my car had been in a head on collison with a large oak tree in my neighbors yard on the other side of the street. Thank god, otherwise it would have been in their living room.

I was given a ticket for unattended moving vehicle.

Now let me see....I need to go take a pain pill...typing fingers hurt!!

Have I mentioned anyway here on these threads that my Divemaster at Scuba Club last week cut himself on my dive knife? Just ask Raymundo at SCC. He will tell you the sordid story of how Mary's dive knife attacked Raymundos finger!

Yep, it is true!!!

Geez Mary, I wouldn't let any of the dive operators know about your adventures. They just might refuse you service in fear that you'll cause their boat to sink. :D

Still it is a great laugh.

Please refer to post #90. ;) :D

She is kinda like watching a train wreck....can't really pull your eyes away. :)

What will happen in the life of Mary today? Shark Attack? Banditos? Earthquake? TSUNAMI !!!!

Loyal fans are on the edge of their seats.

What really cracked me up last night. I have my dive light in hand because...I am now a woman on a mission for AIRCONDITIONING anywhere, any price! Our hotel was in lockdown for safety reasons, all the doors leading outside were LOCKED...which means if there had been a fire we all would have died...probably from drowning in the swimming pool to keep free of the flames...but I digress.

I am asking the little amigo...only one on duty...speakie berry little englesh, to let me out of the doors (or I would have to choke him). He warns me "Oh, madame (so elegant) careful, kidnap." I am asking kidnap...people will kidnap me?" He nods Yes!! I tell him...okay...I will try not to get kidnapped. Heck I am telling my kids all the time not to get kidnapped and they just nod okay.

I then saunter down the street, black as night, pretty cool actually. And find me a room with AC. On my way back to the blackened dark scary kidnapping section of town, I think I saw my first Playa Del Carmen hooker. It is hard to say. They may just be bad dressers.

So, then there is this lovely black woman walking in front of me. She is going to the same hot and locked and now very, very dark hotel, with no flashlights. She is trying to get in the door. But, it is very locked. Luckily for her I was in the right place right time (for once) and was able to flashlight the front desk area to please let us in...so we do not get kidnapped. I then proceeded to pack in the dark!!!
The girl was thanking me profusely for saving her life! (her words):D

Seriously though,

I love this place. Playa Del Carmen. I could move here. In fact I may just do that. I walked down...oh what street was it? hmmmmm...near the Blue Parrot Beach club tonight. There is the coolest bar with large middle eastern hookas on the tables surrounded by wide sofas and willowy curtains. I would have hung out...but they only smoke tobacco out of those things. What a waste.

I love the fact that I can eat dinner at 11:30 at night!!!

Had Spinach ravioli with blue cheese sauce and pine nuts...have to go look at the name of restaurant. Hmmmmmm....hmmmmmmmmmmm. I have eaten in Italy and this place might as well have been in Italy. IMHO

Mary, sounds like you found Om Bar. (There's an Om in Tulum a well) Also the "Little Italy" section.

Lots of good Playa information here, including a good selection of restaurant and bar listings. Playa del Carmen News,Real Estate,Tours,Golf,Hotels,Restaurants,Nightlife - Playa Maya News,Playa del Carmen,Mexico

Playa is very international and has lots variety and no shortage of interesting. It's rarely as quiet as you're currently seeing. ENJOY IT!!!! (Last time I saw it that quiet was a couple months after Wilma in '05) Normally Playa is wall to wall people day and night. Busy, traffic, street and beach vendors, locals and tourists going in all directions.

If you like quality chocolate you have to go to Ah Cacao Ah Cacao Real Chocolate - Welcome ;) Mmmmm!

You've never had dinner in Holbox tho. Quite an experience...

You didn't know that knives are prohibited in Mexican dive parks?
