I am a regular cold water diver. If I don't let water into the hood (to fill up the ears) I will not be able to equalize. Make sure you have water in your hood/ears. Do this at the surface befor you decend.

Oh, I forgot to mention, since the event last year, I started taking one generic claritin tablet 2 to 5 hours before diving, and try to remember to squirt Afrin up my nostrils immediately before the dive. Not to say that it helped, but I haven't had problems with ear squeezes since. But I am also dressed alot warmer.

Hi,

Here are a few tricks that work for me.

1. I live in the desert and have dry sinuses (like most of us). I use saline spray to help moisten my sinuses a few days before a trip.
2. Gargle with mouthwash before diving. The mint seems to help open up the sinuses.
3. Afrin non drowsy nasal spray can be a divers best friend.
4. If you own your own hood, have your LDS or carefully punch a hole where your ears would be. Of course don't poke it while you're wearing it. This allows the water to flow in and out of the hood and avoid a air pocket against your eardrum.

Of course, I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV. Talk with an ENT to see if maybe you have some issues they can help with.

Good luck!

Thats a smart idea! Punching a hole where the ears should be. I'll keep that in mind.

I often dive in a freshwater sink that has a signifcant thermocline. It took me a while to notice that I would clear effortlessly until we hit the cold section. I suspect the cold temperature causes some type of constriction that makes clearing more difficult.

How did I solve this issue? A prescription for flonase has cured all my clearing woes.

If i have problems clearing I simply pull the hood out a bit from my ears so that i get water in/around my ears, this fix the problem for me.. At times i have to do this at around 40-60 feet. Seems to be some kidna threshold there for me. Once I get water into the hood and are able to clear, I can go deeper without having to worry about it again..
