I doubt Uncle Sam would take the whole thing lying down if the money truly was out there, heck they have subs and such I hear.

Uncle Sam is much too lazy to go and do the work. they wait until someone finds something and then steps in and says "it's ours... thanks". That's what Marty's been fighting the last few years.

I think that while the government may "let" salvage rights be granted they will never let an ounce of gold escape. Personal possessions fine but US of A Gold no way no how. They probably have not even brought out the big guns yet. RMS-is a Mail Ship and this ship was flying under that flag no question so does the UK have a claim? Was the gold "Mailed" and therefore falling under a whole new set of rules? Maybe the secret Government contract for shipment was done by the Military is this now considered a "war" ship? It is my guess the government will only pull out the big guns if any gold is recovered. However I am of the doubting Thomas camp for now and I will bet hmmmmm a lobster (it may take years for payment) that no gold is ever found unless it is in the ships safe and was a passenger's. Of course as always my opinion and $2 will get you a medium iced coffee at Dunkin Doughnuts.

Peace

i agree with ya thetre..
on the iced coffee too :)
but i thinh theres enough of this in the past to refer to as far as the person finding it getting it.
Mell fisher for one, and then the Widah out on the cape...
but im not sayng IF he does find anything there not atleast gonna keep him busy in court for a few years.
but i think hes just gonna find a bunch of misc valuables, and rusty metal
hopefull no one gets hurt, and i do wish him luck.... it would make a good story.

Up above I referenced his site. There's some legal stuff there specifically about the governments claim, and the exclusive salvage rights that was just granted [and thus the recent press]

huh.. dont know how i missed that

There's another great book about modern treasure hunting, "Three Miles Down" by James Hamilton-Paterson

More secret shipments of gold :D
