I can't believe nobody is talking about this.

Read it a few times. Now that was a deep salvage job. Over 10,000fsw if I remember right. A huge undertaking compared to 270fsw. But look at the reward. P.

I am willing to bet that there is no gold on this ship and more than one person will die trying to prove there is. A shipment of gold that size would require huge logistics to move about and someone would have opened their mouth about it. It seems to be the same thing with the rumors of gold "no gold was ever recovered" the part they forget to add in is there wasn't any gold to "recover" in the first place. If I remember correctly this is the second person to "discover" the wreck.

I've got one phrase for this treasure hunter....soaking wet Italian Lira...........Good luck to him anyway.

By the way, that Ship of Gold was an outstanding book, recommended read for anyone with an interest in diving, treasure, u/w hunting, gold rush, etc.

well I guess what is a bummer is that if say someone else found this wreck and the booty you'd have nothing to show for it except jail time. That's kinda lame. I think if you find it then you should get the rights. Not the rights to maybe find it.

I guess I'm not following what you are stating. Martin Bayerle -found- the wreck almost 25 years ago. There is no question as to the location of the wreck, as the location is specifically given in the Arrest that Bayerle holds on the wreckage.

In other words, he found it, he owns it now. From what I understand Steve Bielenda made a claim against the wreck a few years back but they settled it.

There's a lot of history on the wreck and the salvage efforts [including information on previous salvage attempts]. feel free to peruse www.rms-republic.com .

Dude, if you want an awesome read look for "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea" by Gary Kinder.

I'm pretty sure I have a copy of that awaiting some free time sitting on my 'shipwreck desk'. Another one I can recommend for those in this area is Expedition Whydah by Barry Clifford, about his efforts to locate the pirate ship Whydah off of Wellfleet on Cape Cod.

Perhaps they spin all these stories of legal hell to save all the treasure hunting for themselves... but somehow I doubt it ;)

Expedition Whydah was a good read. Clifford's first wife must be bummed she left him for "wasting" his time and money on looking for it. :)

Great link nice little blurb on the ship. I still think you would have better luck chasing after lost artifacts in and around Boston Harbour than finding any gold worth the cost on the Republic. Always a secret deal with a secret shipment. I find it hard to believe that they could tranfer the passengers and crew and secure the ship for towing and with all that governement money sitting there no war ships showed up to really arrest the wreck. It will make a great story but in the end lets not sign up Geraldo to open that safe. I owed the IRS $128 and they all but took my first born until I sent them a check. I doubt Uncle Sam would take the whole thing lying down if the money truly was out there, heck they have subs and such I hear.

yeah this has been a active topic latley in the NEwhecddivers group
i guess ill go see what pi$$in match is goin obn latley over there.
