Hurricane Katrina: What went wrong? - After Katrina - MSNBC.com

A mandatory evacuation did not happen until 19hrs before the storm. Not enough time to get hospitals or people evacuated out of the city. It takes days to remove patients to outlying hospitals. Our plan here is set up as a 3 day event depending on the number of patients in house. There was no time and no follow through with any disaster plan that the city had in place. It was a perfect example of how corruption had taken over that city and the effects of poor government at the city, state, and federal levels.

We all learn from mistakes and it seems that they are really looking at this situation seriously. We have as part of our community quite a few refugees from New Orleans that had to restart here after losing everything. Their stories are beyond belief. But it did prove that we all are neighbors and will fight for our fellow man in their time of need. I am lucky to be part of the medical community in that way.

Baton Rouge checking in. I was the triage nurse at the P Mac center for the first few days after Katrina. It was an experience I'll never forget. It was truely humbling. I think we have a better grip on it this time. All we can do right now is wait and pray.... Tim

Amadus98, just took a peek....110mph and the barametric is dropping. Good luck brother. Tim

What a rapid intensification. It was 80mph when I finally went to bed (thanks to cable and internet going out, hehe). By the time I got up, the 7am CST update was out at 120mph and 955mb, making Gusty Gustav a major hurricane at category three.

Although the high pressure could steer it a bit to the west, it's looking more and more like it's becoming less a question of whether Baton Rouge will get it and more a question of *how much* of it we'll get.

Hey Clay, the Rocky Mtns don't sound so bad right now ;) We will survive to dive another day! Tim

Where in town are you? I'm in Melrose (between Florida and Greenwell Springs, just east of Foster). Flooding's not an issue here, but we've got three big oaks and a very tall pecan in our yard, with some very tall cypress in the yard south of us and some precarious-looking tall pines in the yard to the north. (If we're on the east side, at least those pines would be aimed the other way.)

Of course, our power is on poles down the middle of the blocks, so I'm almost certain to need the generator at *least* short term. I've got extension cords ready for deployment, some micro-lamps (light bulbs and adapters to let you plug them right into a two-prong socket), and a (digital) broadcast TV receiver setup for good measure.

The wildcard is still that high pressure area moving in from the north. Determining the final approach of Gustav is going to come down to the wire. All I have left to do is to make a final pickup-and-stow run outside. After that, it's just waiting (and speaking calmly to the cats, who are going to be hiding under the furniture by the time the fun starts).

I'll have to get a few friends to volunteer to proxy information out if we're hit hard enough to lose the network.
