Renting makes sense, but I’d like to use my gear and get to know it well. Definitely a hassle factor packing, but I see no reason to carry much clothes on a Dive trip, so I have more weigh concessions for gear.

Hi flyboy08

Renting is a hassle and getting your ponies filled is a hassle. Travelling with a 6cf or 13cf is no problem as long as you are not overweight. At least one of my ponies has been on every trip for the last 14 years. Pack it in the top portion of your checked bag so TSA can inspect it easily and WALL-LA, like magic, it arrives at your destination.

Oh yeah, uncork it before you put it in your checked bag.

Filling is where I have the most push back. Dive operators hate it and they use all the clichés to dissuade and brow-beat you.

I have a transfill whip. I rent or grab a tank for shore diving and get a close-to-full pony that way. No fuss, no muss, no brow-beating. And, I don't have to wait 2 days for the dive op to fill it.

No problem with fills...$12.50 with a Nitrox I’m told...seems high, but not many choices on Brac. I plan on removing the first stage and wrap the TSA rules around the tank I printed out for review if need be.

Hi flyboy08,

No need to wrap the TSA rules around the bottle. They see scuba stuff all the time. The most important thing is too remove the valve from the tank and do not put a dust cap over the end of the tank (don't plug the hole).

But, but, FOD could get in my tank...and then I will need a new visual inspection...but, but, but....

At your destination, do your own FOD inspection. Use your dive light and look for FOD inside the bottle. Make sure the valve is clean and then screw it on and transfill it.

So, the dive op says "no problem," they will fill your pony with Nitrox... Yeah, I have heard that before, many times before. And then when I get there, it is always a different story. You will be lucky to have your pony filled for your first, or second, or third dive. They always have an excuse.

They don't like air hogs, they don't like solo divers, and they don't like anyone who breaks with religious orthodoxy. You are the cookie the cookie machine spit out and if you don't adhere to their religious dogma, you shall be brow-beaten into submission.

I am cynical from experience.

The title of the thread, and the exchanges in it, bring back fond memories of an earlier time on SB: Welcome to the Dork Diver Forum!.
Here is a pic of my BCD.

Hi BlueTrin,

May I ask a personal question? Are you male or female.
If you are female that BC is a fashion statement. If you are male, it says :dork2: all over it!

I like DORK, where can I buy one?

I am male :)

You can buy one by ordering a custom order with halcyon (link to the form)

If you call any dive shop willing to make an order to Halcyon for you, you can ask them the price for a custom order: you’ll have to pay abit more but the order will take over 6 weeks to arrive as they will literally make the wing for you rather than sending one from the inventory.

If you are overcome by the dorkness and decide to go with it, then make sure to ask them the current selection of dork colours. They keep adding more colours every year for us dorks :)
:dork2:

Edit: there is also a blue 20 years edition at the GUE shop: link. Looks cool but I think I’ll just buy a cheap second hand wing if I need one for doubles, that’s just too much money :)

Yep...strap on a pony with your steel bp and wrap yourself up in a 7 ft. long hose (with a can light) and climb on a warm water rec dive boat = DORK :dork2::dork2::dork2::)
