Are you really in a contest over who is the bigger dork? Perhaps I can help you decide.
Do you now, or have you ever, been seen in public with one of these?

I don’t know what this is ..... but from one dork to another ..... that’s pretty dorky

You really don't know? I couldn't believe I could still find them for sale online.
It is a hinged fin - so you don't have to take them off to walk around, or climb a ladder. I have no idea how they actually perform in the water. Maybe next someone will join in and rave about how great they are.

Renting makes sense, but I’d like to use my gear and get to know it well. Definitely a hassle factor packing, but I see no reason to carry much clothes on a Dive trip, so I have more weigh concessions for gear.

You can start by slinging an Al80 and getting the "feel" for it. The reg and stage kit, and more importantly the bolt snaps, are still yours. I have a few funny but infuriating anecdotes about bringing a scuba cylinder on board an airplane.
