Some awesome suggestions guys/gals. Thanks a bunch. I have at least 3/4 of this thread saved on my computer. I think I'll be doing some painting tonight.

Tigern:
Just looking for serious (ok, maybe some humorous) suggestions on how to make yourself almost instantly recognizable underwater.
I also think it would come in useful when diving with groups of divers that if I’m recognizable underwater as a DM then they could approach me underwater if they are having problems.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Ok here's my .02 cents.

Tell them if they have an emergency and need to call home (even at depth, say 100ft), you have this waterproof thing bungeed up in your left d-ring that any one can use:D.

I write "Your Ad Here" on the bottoms of my fins in yellow marker. People seem to recognize me.

I have a buddy that dives the pink gear setup, so I can always find her.

It is a problem though. When I did my nitrox class, we went off a boat and the vis was HORRIBLE. I had a DM and a buddy, and we passed close enough to another team to trade buddies without realizing we had passed them. The traded buddies were both in black clad gear, and it was only when I looked at faux buddies eyes that I realized he was the wrong buddy. D'oh!

My fins are black and yellow and I wrote my initials on the bottom of my fins. I sometimes write my name on a piece of duct tape and stick it to the back of my tank. Makes it easier to find my tank after getting refills.

To find my buddies, I look at fin color, body size, and any accessories that make them look different. My buddy usually carries his camera, and another buddy has a beanie with spikes on top.

Lots of good ideas in this thread.

Generally, you should think about where the other divers will be when you want them to be able to spot you.

If they are behind you doing somthing distinctive on the bottom of your fins is a good idea. If they are above, or to either side, then doing somthing to your tank is the best. If they are in front of you then somthing on your head is best.

Your name or initials on the bottom of your fins should be fine. If you are using a variety of rental or boat provided tanks then that will rule out modifications directly to the cylinder, but it leaves open the option for the cam bands on your BC. If you are in warm water then you will find little use for a hood, but a bright color hose wrap or mask strap might fit the bill.

Generally you need to be creative, if it is commercially available then eventually you will see it on another diver. Making the custom use of color is the key, try getting some of that black and yellow caution tape and wraping your cam bands or regulator hoses. If you have your own tanks that you dive with try some reflective tape so you will stand out on night dives.

A few ideas for you:
A few of my trip leaders had plastic shark (or porpoise) fins that attached to their tank straps. (Careful while kicking on the surface, though...some idiot with a rifle in his boat could make things interesting).
I've seen novelty beanies with the same thing on top (ditto to the parenthetical comment above).
White light strobes attached to your tank valve are effective even during the daytime.
Several divemasters have reported unfortunate incidents with anything that floats above them...entanglements, etc...
Personally, I only have my name on my tank (on all sides), but I'm not usually a trip leader.

Just a few thoughts.

What the heck IS that Caloy?????

Since all our diving in Oregon is wetsuited, I add a white lycra swim cap over my hood to help the students key in. For a more festive look I use a dee rag.

Underwater strobes are great - especially in limited vis and come in all kinds of colors, but the best things I have seen are brightly colored wetsuit beanies - I saw a Harvey's in neon lime green this past week. No missing anyone in that.
