Has there ever been a death where the main cause (or even a contributing factor) was cited as the canister being attached to the backplate with a metal to metal connection? There are alot of ways of dying while diving. I think your risk of death mounting a canister to the backplate is tiny. At least not any larger than many other things. I know the risks of metal to metal connections. I would be more concerned with metal to metal connections on stage or deco bottles before the canister.

Ok man you win.

You've slayed the DIR dragon today.

Randy8876, I am sorry that myself and another DIR tried to get you to use a configuration that might help you in the future. Put your light anywhere you want man.

Best of luck.

Yep, I'm DIR (or maybe DIR-X even). I just thought if he was trying to mount it to the side of his plate that the waist belt was just as good. I don't know it the green force lite turns on/off with a twist of the light head or has a switch on the can. If it's mounted on the plate next to the tank then it may be hard to turn it on, if the latter is true.

Lubold8431, welcome back, I haven't seen one of your posts in quite some time.

As already mentioned above, you can use hose clamps, d-ring holders, small 1" d-rings and quick disconnects to mount the light to the backplate......and no, you will not die from it like a few like you to believe, after all the Greenforce lights are small and slender enough to fit into any craves and should not cause entanglement or other problems mounted to the plate.

Like you I also do not mount my light on my belt, instead it is strapped to my tanks. On the belt I found it to interfere with my diving, uncomfortable and a general PIA ..... also , most of the people that mount their lights on the belt do also to be able to reach the switch that is on the top of the canister and have no other choice.

But try both methods and see what works for you, in this sport/hobby/obsession/addiction there is no one right way of doing things (even though some seem to lecture it) -- do what works for you and modify your gear to fit your needs, not the other way around

Some of the "Sartek" cannisters come set up to go on a backplate. You can get an idea how it's done on that site.

I like it both ways.

For normal OW dives I like let it all hang out for all to see on my lower tank strap - I find when on the waist strap the weight of the battery hinders putting the belt on. It actually fits quite snugly between the tank and the wing.

If I'm going to be crawling about in a wreak or if theres any other chances for getting fouled then I'm a good boy and tuck it away on my waist.

I thread the tank/belt webbing through the attachment decribed by onefloat.

Some people take this subject very seriously and i'm hoping this thread will heat up.

Cheers,
Rohan.

My nocturnal came with a belt set up as well as d-rings and screw links. It seems it could be mounted anywhere. I've not dove it yet with the new BPW setup. That will happen this weekend. With my jacket bc I added two nylon straps with rings under the tank pad and extended them out so that I could use the screw rings to connect it.It sat on the right side of my tank nice and snug yet at the same time the straps eliminated the metal to metal concern. Where it is mounted as far as turning it on is a nonissue since the switch is on the light head. I'll be putting it on the belt this weekend and see how it goes. If I don't like it I'll move it.

Yep, the Greeforce has an accessory available to mount to he backplate. As does Metalsub.

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I was hoping this wouldn't become a DIR/ Doing it another way debate, but I suppose in any gear set up discussion that's something that has to come up.

Onfloat-
My light came with an attachment to thread it onto a belt, but do you wear a seperate belt or thread it onto your waist strap part of your harness? If it is threaded onto the waist strap how do you make it ditchable without eliminating the 'D' ring on the right side?

If I put it on the backplate it appears I could tuck it pretty far behind the wing without interfering with the wings inflation. There isn't a switch on the canister, so I don't need to reach it to turn it on or off. I'll see about taking a picture of what I mean and I'd appreciate hearing everything wrong or potentially dangerous about mounting it this way.

I looked on the Sartek website, but couldn't find how they were mounting theirs. OMS had a decent picture, it looks a lot like a modified hose clamp. GF doesn't seem to offer too much for descriptions of a lot of the accessories on their website, so I'm not sure what item they use for backplate mounting (maybe their rep could chime in with advice?).
