How to get hose protectors on?

Many (most?) styles of hose protectors are on so tight and are so stiff that you can not pull them back. Hence this thread...

Pulling on an extremely tight hose protector will be putting some amount of stress on your hose crimp thing. Not sure how significant this is, but it likely does not increase the service lifetime of a hose.
