What does joining a group do (other than possibly changing your title)? Is there a secret forum for each group that you can only see by joining that group or something?
For most, you just want to identify with a particular group. However, some groups do have forums only they can access. Instructor to Instructor can only be accessed by DMs and higher and so forth.

Any way to tell which are which? Or do you just have to join the group and then go look through the whole list of forums to see if you can spot one that didn't show up before?

Restricted forums:

Business2Business (anyone in the business)
Captains (Licensed Captains)
I2I (DMs & higher)
Tech2Tech (Tech certified)
The Pub (Regulars)

I can't think of any more.

I'm not anti DIR, or pro DIR, but think there are some interesting things that are worthy of discussion.
Not being a member of that group won't stop you from reading their forum.

Most of the ones that say Moderated by: in the description are going to have some minimum qualification also.

A lot of the "Free to Join" - but not all of them will get you the user title also.

Can you change my user title from Divemaster Candidate to what one goes with my post count as I am no longer a DM. thanks.

Yes that would mean you joined the group Solo Divers at some point.
If you leave the group you would have the name of either one of the other groups you have joined or if you're not in any group you would have a fish name.
To leave a group hover over your name in the top right of your screen and select Join User Group. You can then click Leave User Group within the menu.
This does not work for me. I joined the board over ten years ago. It shows I do not belong to any user group so there is no option to unjoin. I would like to remove the solo diver user title.

@FishDiver : According to your registered profile, you belong to three secondary user groups (DIR Practitioner, Qualified Member and Solo Diver) and one joinable user group (DIR Practitioner). Don't ask me what the difference between the two types of groups is.

Ok I went and removed you from solo divers. Manta ray is the new title, it’s a reflection of your post count.
