Some findings on craigslist this week, two sets of hot dip galvanized HP120 banded doubles, and an HP40 stage. Those I had to pay real money for. They need hydro but I don't anticipate any problems.
Also two 1960s era tanks, an LP72 and an oddball U.S. Divers cylinder rated 3AA-1800, that's 1980 with the +, works out to 52 cf. I paid very little for those because the seller knew they had some internal corrosion and disclosed that. He said a former owner used his own compressor with questionable filtration. Tanks and valves were a mess with soot-like material as well as some rust dust. I disassembled, cleaned, rinsed, dried.
Looking inside the tanks, there is some corrosion and pitting. I'd like to try to save the LP72, and there's a local hydro facility that performs internal shot blasting, which they say is a better choice than tumbling. The 52 cf I'm thinking is probably best used as a wind chime, but who knows. The pitting is worse on that one and it has the brown internal coating.
Is there any way I can evaluate the pitting on the 72 and get a better idea whether the tank can be salvaged? Hate to waste time and money taking it to the hydro shop if it's a lost cause.
