Well, when I went in off the beach at La Jolla it seemed well over half of the divers had Dry suits, maybe just a bad day. And I have some So Cal friends that won't dive Catalina in the winter cuz it's to cold. Wet is one thing, for me cold is painful. I gave up skiing, should I give up diving ?
Money ,,, I guess my point is that, to buy all of the posible wet suit combinations, for even So Cal is a lot of money. ( if you buy good or often) Where a good deal on a Dry suit might cover everything for a number of years. Now I'am not the kind of guy to buy the So Cal favorite for $2500 and I don't wear $400 underwear either. But there are some good Dry suits at around $800-900 and you can wear your long underwear and sweats.
And the "what if's" can go on for ever. I never intended to back roll off a boat without my mask. So what about try a Dry Suit ,, What if you like it ?????? I guess wet suits never rip ,,, especially if you get them really big.
I guess if I'd been diving for ten years and had a ton of wet suit time , I'd sell wet suits. But I'am a pretty new diver and trying to cover the range of Puget Sound to So Cal to the tropics without working. So hauling a bunch of wet rubbber around doesn't appeal.
best of luck don O
