The Henderson Aqualock booties have a pretty decent sole. I’ve been happy with mine.

As a follow-up, I'm currently in the process of glueing an extra rubber sole to these - pretty comfy to wear, we'll see how the DIY holds up.

Talking to local non-Japanese divers, most people recommend booties with felt covered insoles, which I'm not familiar with - apparently the felt layer protects from urchin punctures if i understood correctly...

I love my Hendersons. They are 5mm and I wear them all year. Good for the boat and for shore entry.

These do look great but are impossible to find in Japan - no distributors.
TUSA boots, on the other hand - issue is size more than anything else, for my 28.5 / 29cm feet ^^

The XS Thug boots have served me well on rough terrain, I also did not need to change fin size to accommodate the sole.

I have used both SeaSoft Sunray and Akona Fit Low Molded Sole Boot. Both worked well in Bonaire. The Seasoft are higher in the ankle with a zipper, the Akona pull on.

I have very wide feet and both of these fit well.

This is the finished product, extra 6mm rubber sole glued on to Ergos with Aquaseal SR.

Not the prettiest, but solid, fits in OMS Slipstream and great for rocks. Have been diving them a few times, quite happy.

However, the rubber is also not the best grip for algae / mossy concrete, so I followed what local divers are doing here and got a cheap pair of felt booties as well, which should cover most shore diving situations.

I've never dived felt booties, not sure why they're so popular here in Okinawa. Anyone familiar with these?

Here are mine.

cheers

Just did Bonaire at the beginning of June. Used my Aqualung 3mm short boots and did just fine with the rocks on shore dives. I also wear barefoot shoes, so there is that.
