Hey guys

I dive a single-tank bp/w setup (alu plate, harness, oxycheq mach v, no sta). I dive dry with about 10 kg around my waist. I find that this messes with my trim and make me too heavy in the bottom part of my feet.

So I bought some weight pockets to go on my cam bands. My questions is how much weight is generally worn on the cambands? What % of total weight? I understand that the exact amount will come down to my own personal preference and characteristics, but is there a rule of thumb for this?

Thanks.

Nope, no rule of thumb.
In fact, it may change with different rigs.
You'll just have to get your dive buddy to observe your "balancing act".

I have one XS Scuba pocket centered on my cam band--I put 2 lbs in it, but could probably use a bit more, as I dive an aluminum 80 most of the time. You have to play around with the weight till it feels right. If you dive an aluminum tank the litmus test for the best weight will come when the air gets low.

It's all about experimentation. FWIW moving 6 pounds from my belt to my BC trim pockets did the trick but there are dozens of contributing varibles. Try something reasonable and see what happens, it's bound to be better than all on the belt.

If you have some clip-on weights that you can clip and move you may be able to sort it out in short order during one dive. For temporary use regular hard weights, a bolt snap and double tie wraps make instant el-cheapo clip-ons.

Get a SS BP, that will place about 2kg over your lungs, leaves 8 at the belt. Move another 2 on the cam band and you have 6, which is for me pretty nice configuration.

Thanks for all the responses.

Does the position of the weight pocket on the cam band matter? Should I use one or two pockets if one pocket is enough (two pockets for balance??).

I'd say the position matters. I use a SS plate but my single tank rig has a couple of hard 2 pounders threaded right onto the upper cam band. I slide them right up against the plate, one on either side of the tank. I don't need no stinking pouches. LOL

Hmm that sounds like a good idea. Does anyone else thread the weights directly onto the cam bands? Not a big fan of the pockets myself.

Do you find they slide around during the dive Mike? I'm guessing they wouldn't slide more than the pouches would.

No, they don't slide around at all. Once you tighten the cam-band it's all completely rigid but, with most weights, there is a lot of friction to the fit on the band so they don't even slide around when there is no tank on the rig.

I use a couple of XS pouches on the cam band of my Zeagle Scout, held in place with a small clip made by Dive Rite to keep them in perfect position. I put 2 lbs in each one, which is all the lead I use. I considered putting the weights directly on the cam band but I prefer the pouches as it allows me easy access to add/remove the weights without having to remove the cam band.
