10% at a restaurant? It's been a very long time since 10% was acceptable. BTW, when was 10% a standard tip for restaurant service? I don't mean someone putting cream cheese on a bagel or handing you a slice of pizza or pouring a cup of coffee and putting a muffin in a bag, I mean an actual full service restaurant.
I know 10% was acceptable when I was a kid. Probably up through the 80's?

Oh, it was before my time, and I'm old, but there is some history. There is also some talk now about making 30% standard. It's a cycle.

Tipping amounts are a personal thing; don't base how much or even if you tip based on what others do. And put away the hammer and tongs; that does not mean that I do not tip anyone. :^)

In most parts of Mexico, among Mexican consumers, 10% tip (or no tip at all) is pretty standard. 😉 Cozumel and the whole Caribbean area of Mexico seem to follow US tipping customs (as well as base prices 🤯), which is quite shocking for those of us who’ve lived in other areas of Mexico!

For me 30% is right out. I frequently hear that service workers need a "raise", but rising costs are taking care of that, IMO.

Funny how no one ever seems to raise the point that with risings costs, patrons have less discretionary income to give away in tips.

We, too, have 'rising costs.'

I still consider 10% 'acceptable' in a sit-down restaurant as I'm not in competition with anyone and I don't require other's 'acceptance' on the matter. I might aim for 15%, but I don't think I've wronged or stolen from anyone if I don't. This is a form of 'inflation' we can fight.

I think the DM shares with the captain. Last time I was there I tipped $10-$15 per 2 tank trip depending on how good they did. I put $5 in the tip jar at the office every other day, maybe a bit more. The office did an outstanding job making sure they had my tanks right, etc. (DIN, nitrox some dives, not others).

I'm kind of with @DandyDon that a tip shouldn't be expected/obligatory, but I also like to tip when I feel good about the service.

I hope I wasn't being cheep too, lol
Was cheap. Should of been $20 per diver for a 2 tank trip

And here we have an example of unreasonable expectations...

There is actually no reason whatsoever why anyone should tip. It is but a generous practice that is suggested. Cruise barge companies are perhaps the worst about requiring tips.

The % for restaurants should real vary state by state factoring in their minimum wage. Someone told me that I was being cheap and asked if I had a rough week because I tipped 18% (the minimum % on the iPad without hitting custom) when they’re making $19.50 at the minimum. This was the waiter that made the comment. 😱

I continue to be amazed and appalled, that an ipad would have that and that anyone would watch you using it to pay a bill, much less comment. The waiter said that? Even worse.
