How many dives, specifically.

If you dived a BP/W with a single tank before diving doubles how long after becoming OW certified did you do that?

I think i had 30 dives or so but it all goes on how comfertable you are in the water and if you can handel the weight on land. best bet is try a set on Small ones to start i started with 130's made it a little harder Just make sure if your diving steel double have a drysuit and get used to diving it

I learned to dive with a BP an harness (no wings) in 1973. I added a Fenzy-style BC to that a couple of years later. Got a pair of 45 CF co2 bottles converted to doubles in about 1976. The "Open Water" certification did not come into being until about 1979 or 1980. Before that new divers were called "Scuba Divers."

I started using doubles at dive 109, about a year and a half after I started diving. Until then, I had used a jacket style BC. I was comfortable with the BC, but switching to doubles was like learning how to dive all over again, mainly because there is more mass, so it takes more control to manage it.

Well, there's doubles, and then there's doubles...
Dove doubles back in the late 60's early 70's. In fact I think my very first breath off Scuba was using doubles. Started diving "today's" doubles in '95 when I got interested in caves.
Number of dives? Several.

I've been diving dry since shortly after my AOW certification. I still consider myself a rookie in ALL respects, but want to change my dive configuration. In this long journey of a hobby, I'd like to develope a rig that's going to be comfortable and most importantly safe and reliable for me as a diver. My Balance is more than serving its purpose, but is too bulky for me. I don't like having anything more than I need, and all I really feel i need is something to retain any D rings from as well as hold my tank.

As for doubles, I'm more concerned with being comfortable with my bouyancy and might prefer using a BP/W setup with a large single tank for a good few dives before going to two. Is it possible/practical to use a BP/W with a single HP 100+ cu steel tank?

Pic up the doing it right book from gue it has alot of good info save you alot of head ach's and money in you gear set up . and if you neer niagara falls(canada)area i can help you out with you gear and we have a great tech dive shop here that can set you up with anything you need

BP/W dive 6. Doubles, dive 11.

You can DEFINITELY dive a BP/W with a single tank. I switched from a BC to a BP/W at about dive 40, and started in doubles at about 150 dives. It has proven far more difficult to get a set of doubles perfectly balanced than it was to work out weighting and trim with a single tank.

I began diving doubles after around 500 dives and switched to a backplate soon after my BC kept ripping under the weight of my doubles. My first hundered or so dives were in a plastic backback.
