None of you know just how involved NEW is with the board... in fact, you couldn't know. So without being overly cryptic, I wish to thank him for his "behind the scenes" service. I hope that clears up things somewhat.

enough said NetDoc......Thanks

In short, ScubaBoard is a service offered by the broader ScubaSource.com which includes WomenInScuba.com, ScubaHistory.com, LearnScuba.com, AquaTrader.com and literally dozens more sites. As for the board's funding and upkeep, you can thank LD & KN for that... this is their service and something they have chosen to give back to the community. Of course it is all of you that make the board such a success so perhaps pat yourself on the back as well!

P.S. This board isn't a easy or small thing to run so feel free to PM LD or KN and let them you appreciate their work, if you like.

I think part of the reason this question is being asked is a thread I started on rec.scuba where I asked about the vision planned for the scubasource.com "family." I think it's a fair question to ask, because nothing is ever free, and ultimately we're going to have to pay for the services we're receiving here (or not. Personally I can't stand the idea of someone like NetDoc controlling what I write). Knowing where that money is going to come from is a fair question. Is there going to be advertising at some point? Is registration going to mean permission to sell your e-mail address to advertisers? Is this going to become a paid service in the future?

Running this board costs real money, and it's very rare indeed that people spend that kind of money anonymously just to be nice.

after dealing with certain people on rec.scuba for a long time.

I have read that piece on rec.scuba and know of your intent (or least the intent of some on rec.scuba) to EXPOSE the "malicious designs" of KN and LD to take over the scuba world as we know it. It seems that a few of the denizens of rec.scuba are harboring a grudge towards me and WWW.Scubaboard.com . As for your questions...

Is there going to be advertising at some point?
There has been and there probably will be.

Is registration going to mean permission to sell your e-mail address to advertisers?
This very idea is as repulsive to the owners as it is to you. That is also why we do NOT allow your e-mail addresses to be accessible by the casual user. No one is allowed to mine the board for contacts. We have even avoided using your e-mail addresses to promote the board.

Is this going to become a paid service in the future?
The future is a long time... but at least I can say: Not in the foreseeable future.

Personally I can't stand the idea of someone like NetDoc controlling what I write
At least you spelled my name right here… not like on rec.scuba. As long as you stay within the TOS you are welcome to stay. You are even free to despise me for being the meglomaniac that I am. I won’t even moderate what you write. In fact, as I usually do when people don’t like me for whatever reason, I will let the other regulators decide whether your posts fall within the TOS. Unlike rec.scuba, we do not tolerate cyber bullies or thugs.

Running this board costs real money, and it's very rare indeed that people spend that kind of money anonymously just to be nice.
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth… Unless you live in Troy. Being grateful is probably a better angle to employ here. Again, it is not against the TOS to help defray the costs as you see fit.

to KN and LD for this great board.

Craig

As a side note, I think the thread went a little south when the comment "...mouthing off" came out. NEW didn't deserve that. In the PHYSICAL world, that type of comment would often be responded to with a fists'a flyin.

More conspiracy theories  .

IMHO the conspiracy theories about the evil future fundraising plans for SB hold as much water as the conspiracy theories about rec.scubans planing the demise of SB.

Warning: heading off topic here:

The real problem is the bashing that goes on back and forth. The only bashing I'd ever seen on rec.scuba before the Popeye incident were things like:

If you can't take it here head over to scubaboard.

When I started reading here I was quite surprised about how much rec.scuba bashing goes on on this "nice" moderated board. And, quite unfortunatly, most of the bashing comes from the moderators and you most of all NetDoc.

Yes, rec.scuba has its fair share of troublemakers, but here is a hint for you: so does SB. The threat of censorship/banning keeps things a little more clean and on topic over here being the only difference.

Some of us appreciate the usefullness of both forums and don't care for abuse we get from the people/moderators over here because we post to rec.scuba.

"Avoided"??? Hmm, why would I have felt better if you had used the word "won't". I'm not worried about the casual user getting my e-mail address, I'm worried about you selling it to PADI or Mares.

As for looking a gift horse in the mouth, it's generally wise to be a little distrustful of something that seems too good to be true. I'll say it again - it costs real money to run this board, and people don't spend that kind of money for nothing. KN and LD expect to get something out of this. Maybe it's just the undying gratitude of their fellow divers. Maybe it's something a little bit less altruistic. Would people be so supportive of this board if they knew it was run by PADI or DUI or Aqualung or Scubapro? All of these organizations are in the San Diego area, which is where Neptune Divers is located. I'm not saying it is run by any of these companies, because I have no idea, but if it is, then I would start to question the objectivity of the moderators (sound familiar?).

I only pointed out there were "certain people" over there that have a problem. I don't think I wrote anything derogatory about the service itself or the merit of it's content.

Agstreet... We reserve the right to send our users e-mail about our board, though we haven't in the past. We find the concept of SELLING that list to others as repulsive... that means we won't be doing it.

The answer to this has been clearly spelled out in my earlier posts. While you may not want to accept the answer: they are still incredibly nice people to do this for us. That is the motive and a nice board is the result. ALL of the regulators are volunteers as well. This Spanish Inquisition will not reveal any darker motives.

Then why do you post it over on rec.scuba?

If I were Mares or some other manufacturer, I'd run over there and mine the names off the threads. Some are obviously not accurate; however, it would not cost anything to try.
