I was thinking about this last night, and came up with something I was satisfied with:

A good diver is capable of neat, efficient and safe execution of his proposed dives.

An excellent diver adds a measure of grace and elegance to the above.

An extraordinary diver can keep those standards while doing dives under extremely challenging conditions.

Yes. If I may add, PLANS THE DIVE AND DIVES THE PLAN.

Ber Rabbit:
I know them when I see them at the dive site:

Their gear isn't scattered hither and yon, they work from a compact area and their gear is staged in a manner that will minimize dirt/sand exposure and tripping hazards.

They watch their surroundings and notice problems in the gearing up stage. When they see a potential problem with another diver they diplomatically and humbly address it. They know their gear and take the time to know their buddy's gear as well as paying attention to what other divers in the area are wearing "just in case."

Good divers will abort or change their dive plan when needed and they encourage their buddy's to do the same.

They answer questions and offer tips when asked and make other divers feel at ease with their calm and confident aura.

They are beautiful to watch in the water, you can LOOK at them and see that this is their element.

Their gear does not dangle and their kicks don't stir up the bottom or damage the dive site. They know where their body and their gear is in relation to anything that is near them.

They monitor and communicate with their buddy regularly, staying where they can see each other and easily reach one another in an emergency.

Good divers encourage others to be the best they can be and they help any way they can. They strive to improve their own skills and truly want to be the best diver they can be.

A good diver sets a good example for non-divers. They leave the dive site cleaner than they found it and they clean up their "camp" and the adjoining area.

Those divers are the one I admire and respect, they can have hundreds or thousands of dives or they can be new divers but I always know them when I see them.

Nicely said, Ber. I can agree with this, and also, many of the points that Walter raised. A good diver is comfortable in the water, knows his/her limitations, is not afraid to thumb a dive, and is always looking to improve their skills and get more training. A good diver is aware, responsible, and doesn't make excuses or blame others when they make a blunder. Just a few things off the top of my head...

From your OWN words, from your OWN perspective—not an agency perspective---FROM YOUR VIEWPOINT---how would you define what makes a good diver?

Well I'm not sure why you want to know this but here goes:

  • Good entries
  • Good concentration
  • Practice
  • Body control
  • Knowing your relative position
  • Good technique
  • Good style
  • Oh yeah, not hitting your head on the diving board during competition.
:D

If you ever learn to read, you'll see that I did contribute to the thread in a constructive manner, unlike most of the drivel that you incessantly post, sir.

Do you think plan the dive and divie the plan is crucial?

Depends on the dive being planned. If I'm going to 180' with a team, Most Definately!
If I'm diving solo, I'm all about being flexible, and rarely Plan, as those plans fall apart as soon as I backroll off the boat............:D

TSandM and Ber Rabbit have pretty much identified Good Diver traits in their posts.

How could I miss such a informative thread :shakehead
