I want to try a bungied backup and LH configuration, but how do you buy a regulator without the first stage?

(I dive singles on a transpac with an XTX200. I want to get an XTX40 but Aqualung
said that they do not sell this without the first stage; and I don't want a yellow
XTX octo as an OOA might grab my backup instead of the LH primary.)

You already have the Second stage and an octo. Or am I missing something?

what is your set up now? Standard first, second and octo plus LP inflator and HP consol?

You need to do is get a longer hose for your primary and a shorter hose for your octo. In black if you want. Make a bungied necklace...attach it to your OCTO...et voila. now you have to loop your primary.

Under your arm, cross your chest, over your left shoulder, looped lightly around your neck with reg in mouth....Turn your head to the left and adjust the loop so the reg does not feel like it is going to pull.

If you have a can light, tuck under the light. Or tuck in your waiste belt or under a weight pocket. Adjust as needed.

Your consol is another issue.

Have a look at this link
http://www.gue.com/Equipment/Config/index.html

it explains a few things.

Sorry, let me clarify my question...

(current setup...transpac, first, one second, NO octo, SPG gauge)

I do not have an octo at this time. I want a backup second stage for my
XTX200, but was wondering if anybody had trouble getting an XTX40
(without the first stage that the "kit" comes with). Somebody at AL
said that they do not sell the XTX40 (black) second stage by itself;
but I suspect that he did not know what he was talking about.
[I do know that I would have to detune it at LDS to make it a backup]

Thanks for any replies

Richard, PM Joel of Tech Diving Limited http://www.scubaboard.com/member.php?u=14510 here on the board regarding getting another Apeks second stage. Maybe he can help you out. The link to his website is also in his profile. You can also get your hose from TDL.

Also, check out the Hogartian Forum on Scubaboard regarding setting your rig up. There are some helpful threads over there.

I have Scubapro regs, but my LDS pulled the reg right out of a box and detached it from the first stage for me. I have the same regs, S600's for both my primary and backup.

This is the nice thing about Scubapro, they will sell a first stage by itself. You can also get any combination of first & second you want. I don't believe any other manufacturer does that.

I don't know . . . I didn't worry about my secondary being yellow (which it is). I figure that, if the OOA diver is close enough to me to grab for my secondary, I should already have my primary deployed and offered to them. If they're disorganized enough to grab for my secondary, which is tucked under my chin, wouldn't they grab my primary first? I don't see it as a big issue.

You can also buy faceplates and replace them, if you're really worried about it.

I don't know what Apeks is like, but Zeagle's octo's are the same performance, so why not just use the yellow one as the primary if you're concerned about someone reaching for the yellow?
