How did everyone get into scuba?

By accident?
Always wanted to?
Got dragged into it?
Dragged someone into it?

Let's hear your story!

It was always something I wanted to try, but things (time/money/ect) always seemed to get into the way. My wife announced to me that we were taking vacation at the end of October in Florida to Disney (not my 1st choice of places to go and this was in August BTW), and I responded with "I'm going to get certified and go diving then". The rest is blissful history.

My only regret is that I hadn't done it about 10-15 years sooner...

Always watched Jacques Cousteau documentaries as a kid and always wanted to try. When I was in college I got my opportunity, I got a summer job in Tampa, FL. A lot of my co-workers were into SCUBA, so thru their contacts, I got certified. One of my first dives was at a murky beach near the Tampa bridge (forget the name) and my "graduation" dive was at Crystal River. I remember getting somewhat stuck going thru a small cavern, didn't panic at all.

After that I've dived whenever I had the opportunity, although I've gotten spoiled with warm-water diving.

Eddy.

Well, I was sitting on this deserted Island, starring into the future, when this really attractive blond walked up in her bikini. The sun was glistening of her soft wavy hair and she asked me in a very sexy foreign accent, if I would like to go scuba diving with her..............

My younger brother was first certified at 14 and eventually ended up as a PADI instructor. He always told me I'd like diving, but I thought the gear looked too complicated -- you know, something you'd need a degree in engineering to figure out. Finally, at the age of 32, I decided to give it a shot. Wouldn't you know it, he was right all along. :D And the gear, much to my surprise, turned out to be pretty straightforward and not intimidating at all.

Marine Biology degree, it was actually a credit course in the program.

hey, that's how *I* started diving... what a coincidence

actually, i went to Grand Cayman having no clue what
a great scuba diving destination it was. decided to go
snorkeling, since i hadn't snorkeled on a reef in over 20
years...

took a resort course...

and the rest, as they say, is history

i've always been fascinated with animals in general, epsecially marine critters. but just never really took the time to get certified. my gf decided she wanted to do it because it was relatively cheap through her school so i got certified around the same time on my own and we've been diving together for several years now.

I was the Fly Fisherman (whole life.) Wifie was the diver (7 years.)

I told her I'd learn to dive if she learned to fish. She did. I did.

Hundreds of dives, never an issue - I break my leg fishing.

I was tired of being held back, stiffled and told that everything I wanted to do was too dangerous (by hubby). So while on vacation with my non-swimming girlfriend (contemplating the divorce) I decided to give it a try. He wasn't there to stop me!!!Liked it so much I got certified that week. He would have tried to stop me at home. (Girlfriend was really nice about me spending all my time in the water!)
