Man I am seeing a lot of gear here... A spare mask? The only time I ever lost a mask in the water was when I was rescuing some people in a flipped canoe.
I can't say I've ever needed the spare once a dive started. However, it's been handy as a loaner on boats more than once. I try to keep a reasonable Save-a-dive kit with me, but on some boats it's just not feasible. Having it inside a pouch that I'm bringing anyway doesn't really cause any extra work, so I figured I would just leave it there.

I keep all sorts of spare crap around when I dive, but very little of it goes with me in the water. I keep extra two masks in the box, one with a prescription and one as a loaner. Extra lead if I have it, straps, o-rings. but if I need it in the water (which seldom happens) the dive is over. I can seen in a situation like a cave or a deco, where the extra gear would be a good idea, but for most dives, it would just be dragging around a bunch of stuff...

How do you secure the wrist straps for knife and torch when they are stowed/clipped off, or do you bother?

Let's see...

  • Hose AI computer clipped to the left hip D-ring
  • Large knife on the inside of my left calf
  • Small knife on my waistband
  • Trilobite on my left shoulder strap
  • dSMB rigged with a spool in my right thigh pocket
  • Roll-up snorkel in my left thigh pocket
  • Slate on my left forearm
  • Primary light in a soft Goodman on my left wrist
  • Backup light clipped to the right shoulder D-ring and secured to the strap with bike tube rings.
  • Compass and backup computer on right wrist
  • Camera tether clipped to the left hip D-ring
  • Catch bag - if I bring one - folded up and clipped with a double-ender to any available D-ring. Usually that's one of the shoulder D-rings, occasionally it's a crotch strap D-ring. When it's in use, I never clip it off, but carry it in one hand.
