Hi

Just booked and looking for input about Hotel Cozumel.

Hmm, shouldn't you do that before you book? ;)

Stayed there once. I did like the location - easy walk to town, which was really convenient. The hotel has a nice pool. I'm not into organized activities and/or loud music, and they had both all afternoon. If that's not your thing, try and get a room on the street side so you can sit out on your balcony.

Don't bother with the AI package. The food, in my opinion, wasn't too good and you're close to town and a couple other places so it's not like you won't have options.

Have a great trip!

Hotel Coz is a good place to stay. Rooms are good, very nice pool, close to town, ect....I do agree, dont do the AI, as the food is not too good and you will want to eat in town. Taxi ride in, if you want, is very cheap, close to Chedraui if you want to hit the store. Rockin Java is awesome for breakfast....

I've stayed at the Hotel Cozumel the last three times that I've been to Cozy and I bought the A/I each time. I thought the food was ok and it was nice to have breakfast at the hotel before getting on the boats. Your close enough to town to walk in if you want and far enough away that the pod people don't bother you. Safe diving.

I agree you should ask for opinions before you book or buy gear. You made a decent choice this time but too often I see people who made a lousy choice then are dismayed to find that out when it could have been easily avoided.

I disagree with the votes against AI. The adder is only like $40 day or less, depending on your deal. Even if you eat out dinners, you can make that worth it in beer and sodas around the pool, breakfasts, snacks, etc. Not to mention the time and convenience. I'm not there to "dine", I can do that at home. I'm there to dive. I don't care to waste an hour or two for breakfast and lunch. I want to get up, step into the hotel dining room, get a hot breakfast, and be done with it in 15 minutes. Same thing for lunch, and often dinner.

The food isn't gourmet but it's adequate. If you can't find something suitable on a 20 item buffet then you're too picky. Not every dish has to be to your liking. If you don't like the potato salad, then don't eat the potato salad. Hard to go wrong with fajita tacos and burgers, especially when you can have the chef grill them up right in front of you. But once again, the AI can be well worth it *even* if you eat dinner in town every night.

To each his own. I'd be hard put to consume US$40 per day in breakfast, beer, soda and lunch, especially when I can buy beers, sodas, and lunch stuff at Chedraui for far less than it would cost in a restaurant. I skimp in the daytime and splurge at night. YMMV, but I go to Cozumel for more than just the diving, and the restaurants in the evenings are a big plus for me.

Stayed at Hotel Cozumel for eight days last Feb. I liked it. Walked to town after diving each day. And speaking of AI. Unless you go to a high dollar resort (and maybe not even then) don't expect AI to be outstanding. What I did like about Hotel Coz. was you get off the boat, wash and store your gear in your locker, take about 10 steps and a lunch buffet was waiting. Hamburgers, tacos, etc. Nothing fancy, just a little something (along with a cerveza) to relax after the dive. For the price and location, you will love it. Dive safe.

I just got back from Hotel Coz 2 weeks ago. I found the rooms to be quite acceptable. I wouldn't normally do the AI, since I don't drink - booze or much soda - but this trip included breakfast. I don’t know what the breakfast cost since it was “comp’ed” due to some previous problem the LDS had there. I don’t know any of those details. That was nice, except that the cook does not come on duty until 7:00, even though the buffet opens around 6:30 (remember you’re in Mexico). So, the eggs-cooked-to-order line was about 25 persons long by the time the cook started cooking. But they were cooked correctly. I always waited, and had a good breakfast before walking under the street to the lookers to get ready to board our boat. I was quite satisfied with the package the LDS arranged for 3 dives a day. I would not plan on eating your lunch there unless you had to (non-AI plan). An order of French fries from the buffet line (old and hard, not fresh) was $3, and the salad, which appeared to be more garnished for the burgers, was $5. Kind of high priced compared to what you could get elsewhere. I never ate dinner there.
We were supposed to have 2 morning and one afternoon, but the boat crew queried us and we decided to do all three consecutively. We had to go back to the harbor to get fresh tanks for the third dive, but we were usually finished by 2:00 – 2:30 and that let those who wanted to lay by the pool, or shop, or have some drinks ample time to do so before dinner. I tried to schedule another afternoon dive, but found the operator to be less than flexible unless previously scheduled at least the day before, and then you had to have a minimum of 4 or 6 divers. I thought I could just jump on a boat with other divers going out, but that wasn’t the way they ran it. The DMs and the Captain we had were wonderful, even if the office folks were not very flexible.
In any case, it was nice to be able to wash our dive stuff, and put it in a locker right at the pier. Most of us did take cameras, wetsuits and wore our booties back to the room which had a nice place to let them dry off on the balcony.
I think it would be a bit of a rush to go to town and get a full breakfast, and return and be ready to board your boat before 8:00. I was a bit rushed when eating right at the hotel, but I like to brush my teeth after eating versus running under the street to the boat directly from breakfast. I’m also not sure how early other places open such that you could eat at 6:00 or 6:30 and return to the hotel in time.
I bought bottled water from Chedraui (think Mexican Super Wal-Mart) for $0.27/bottle and $1.72/5 liters. I made my own ice tea in water bottles I brought with me, and put them in a collapsible cooler I also brought with me, covered with ice from the ice machines at the hotel. I didn’t know if the ice was safe to “drink” so I used it only for cooling. I also picked up something for light lunches, and we ate dinner out – which was a social event with the LDS group as much as for simple nourishment.
There are no refrigerators or microwaves in the rooms (that we had anyway) so making your own breakfast/lunch is a bit more challenging. I did like the arrangement and location of the dive op very much. This was my first time staying on Coz, so I cannot compare to other hotels. But I would stay there again.

I'm sure one could stock up at Chedraui and eat sandwiches and fruit out of the room a bit cheaper than the AI, I'm just saying the AI is cheaper and a lot more convenient than schlepping into town for every meal and snack. And the Hotel Coz buffet, as "average" as it may be, offers a lot more variety and convenience.
