I would appreciate it if you all could compare Hotel Cozumel and Fiesta Americana. Please comment on: quality of accomodations; pool situation; beach situation; snorkeling off the beach. I will have both divers and non-divers in the party.

Thanks,

Rich Hagelin

With the doors and curtains closed, the rooms are similiar. Open the curtains at HC and you will see the pool (only a couple rooms are OV). Open the curtain at FA and you are lookin over the pool, the beach, and the sea. HC pool is somewhat larger but FA pool is more attractive. Beach at HC is small & somewhat crowded. FA beach is much larger with better water access. Snorkel at HC is marginal. Some structure to attract fish - mostly tires. Snorkel at FA is great. Walk north about 500 meter to put in a Dzul Ha (sp) and drift back. Depth to 25 ft with some coral heads 10 ft high & 10 ft in dia.

Only advantage to HC is price and access to town.

We have stayed at the Fiesta Americana but not Hotel Cozumel. The accommodations at the Fiesta are nothing stellar but clean. We had an ocean front room which is a waste of money as you are so far away from the ocean. To get to the water you must cross a road. The beach is adequate and adjacent to one of their dining areas. There is a dive outfit there which we were not impressed with at all. They handle large groups with varying degrees of ability and basically dive tables. The food at the Fiesta is expensive and not good. You are very far from town so there is little choice but to dine there or pay a $10 taxi fee (one way) to go into town. The second time we went to Cozumel we stayed within walking distance of town and dove with Aldora Divers. We had a great time. They cater to smaller groups and manage the dive trips the best. They allow for 45-60 minute underwater time (or when you run out of air) followed by an hour and a half interval time. The second dive is also a long dive. They are great! www.aldoradivers.com gives more information.

Sorry to correct you crystalscubacat, but the taxi ride to town from FA is not $10 its 60 pesos each way. Made that trip almost 100 times. To downtown is mot much more than 10 minutes. We always stay at FA and only eat there for breakfast and lunch on days we dive. All other meals we taxi to town. I second your suggestion of Aldora. We enjoy them as well.

Hey Rich,
We are going to Akumal first, and then to Coz on the 14th of May. We'll be staying at the FA. The countdown timers on a few of our replys almost coincide. Hope to see you there. I like to hear some stories about your exploits in that sweet F4 Phantom!

Hopefully see you there too! We'll have a good trip report for this board when we get back!
