Luckily, you have two years before the event. I would suggest spending this summer exploring the different types of diving around Florida. See what you both like the most. Saba has mountain trails (for hiking, not biking). Grenada has beautiul waterfalls. Costa Rica has zip lining.

Lynn - thanks for your response. Have you ever stayed at Barefoot Cay?

No I have not stayed there... stayed in West Bay at Las Rocas and at Fantasy Island. Go to the Central America link and click on Bay Islands... You can find all the information you want there.....
Good luck... so many choices.....

+1 for Barefoot Cay. We spent a morning there, did two dives, ate in their restaurant and walked around the Cay - it's probably where I'll stay if I return to Roatan. French Harbor is close (walking distance?) for a little variety. Supposed to be good snorkeling off the Palapa also as the barrier reef further out both shields the shallow lagoon just offshore. The thing that might be a little unpleasant about Roatan is it's hot and muggy in May. Although living in FL - probably not an issue for you...lol.

You might look into Curacao also. It's basically the same diving as Bonaire - on the same reef - just a bigger island with more things to do. There's a famous shopping area downtown, nightclubs, a dozen casinos, some really good restaurants, nice resorts - the Marriott at Emerald Bay in Piscadera Bay is a good one. There's also a new Hilton somewhere. Almost all the resorts have their own dive operator - at many of the bigger ones it's Ocean Encounters - we dove with two of their locations - no complaints. For a more economical stay, there's a Breezes AI resort in town. Insel Air flies there from MIA - stops in Bonaire. 5hrs. out 3+hrs. back. Currently it's showing as $372 r/t for next spring - my travelsite doesn't extend fares 2 years out.

If you like things quieter, look at Westpunt - about 45mins from town Allwest Apt's gets good reviews - I've been to it but never stayed there. There's a couple of local restaurants but other than that you'd have to drive back to near town for most others. Or there's the Lodge Kura Hulanda - one of the leading Small Hotels of the World. I've been in a suite and one of their restaurants - it's very nice. Their staff is exceptional. Ocean Encounters West is onsite - 50 yards off their dock is Playa Kalki - IMO the best shore dive on Curacao. They also go to Watamula twice/wk. it's been named the Best boat dive.

Within 15-20 mins. are several other good shore dive sites, Playa Lagun, Jeremi, Porto Mari - others. All are easy entries off a sandy beach. Except for Jeremi all have their own diveop also. The diving on Curacao is mostly small stuff, although we had dolphins swim by our apt. twice in Lagun but not while we were in the water. Often saw turtles, eels, lots of smaller fish, octopus (at night), slipper lobster, other interesting stuff. At Varsenbaai we dove an 80' pontoon boat wreck, found a couple 6'+ moray eels, seahorses near the mooring ball, squid swimming near the dock and turtles feeding in the grass in 8' of water - on the same dive!! There's often turtles at Lagun also. A friend used to guide on Curacao, she said Snake Bay is one of the best. And you can dive with Dolphins at the Seaquarium thru Ocean Encounters - it's $200 pp. though. Admittedly it's not wild dolphin diving but it's still the highlight of my trip there.

Many Curacao natives are tri-lingual. Downtown navigating is fairly easy. Get a map for out west, street signs aren't their strong suit. Although every time we stopped for directions locals were very helpful. There is some crime mentioned, we never saw any. There's a deepwater port and refinery near downtown so it's expected.

Or if you go to BFC on Roatan, day trip to Anthony's Key and dive with the Dolphins there. It's cheaper also - around $125pp iirc.

I am also looking at Belize. I am considering Hamanasi and Turneffe Island Resort. But am totally open to any ideas. Seems like there's more to do around Hamanasi but the diving is farther away.
It is. Any of the mainland resorts near Hamanasi, Hopkins, or Placencia/north Placencia all have to run out to the barrier reef - often thru it for the best diving. Makes Turneffe, Thatch Caye, BlackBird Caye, others a closer option for better diving. Their downside is that non-diving activities like the Mayan ruins, jaguar tours, caves etc. are day trips back. On the mainland Turtle Inn (the Coppola place - not cheap but it is your 25th right..) looked pretty nice as did the Inn at Roberts Grove.

fwiw, I've never been to Belize but we had planned to go there this spring to Whaleshark dive. Some of the above resorts do that - most at an extra fee IIRC. You might also look at packages with Splash Dive or Avadon Divers in Placencia. One place they bundle - Laru Beya - was on our short list. On the beach, close to town, AI if wanted. They bundle everything from when you step off the plane in Belize City - even transport from the Placencia Airport and to/from your resort daily.

Steve...thanks so much for the detailed reply. Will definitely give it all some thought.

You have two years and you are limiting yourself to your same side of the world. Research will prove that live aboard dive boats all over this wide world all usually run within a few hundred dollars of each other. When looking at a dive resort is it all inclusive? If not how much are meals, drink and dive packages. Airline fares are where the difference is made. Your 25th is very special so make the trip very special. Fiji has wonderful resorts with world class diving. Roundtrip out of LA is around $1000. The Nai'a is a world class live aboard offering gourmet meals and service. There is also Palau with a couple of great resorts and liveaboards. Think outside of the Caribbean box.

Thanks for the response! We are kind of limiting ourselves to this side of the world to keep costs down as we have two kids in college and one heading to med school. Not to mention there may be two weddings to pay for in the future. :-/ Fiji and Bora Bora are dreams for us. We have always wanted to go. As far as the liveaboards....I don't really think that's for us. We love to dive but we want to do other things as well.

Most of the places I have looked at offer dive packages and dining packages. Still in the research phase so not sure what I want to do about that. I really don't want to commit to 15 dives a week and 3 meals a day in one place. That may change though the more I learn.

Love the ideas....keep em coming!
