+1 for Barefoot Cay. We spent a morning there, did two dives, ate in their restaurant and walked around the Cay - it's probably where I'll stay if I return to Roatan. French Harbor is close (walking distance?) for a little variety. Supposed to be good snorkeling off the Palapa also as the barrier reef further out both shields the shallow lagoon just offshore. The thing that might be a little unpleasant about Roatan is it's hot and muggy in May. Although living in FL - probably not an issue for you...lol.
You might look into Curacao also. It's basically the same diving as Bonaire - on the same reef - just a bigger island with more things to do. There's a famous shopping area downtown, nightclubs, a dozen casinos, some really good restaurants, nice resorts - the Marriott at Emerald Bay in Piscadera Bay is a good one. There's also a new Hilton somewhere. Almost all the resorts have their own dive operator - at many of the bigger ones it's Ocean Encounters - we dove with two of their locations - no complaints. For a more economical stay, there's a Breezes AI resort in town. Insel Air flies there from MIA - stops in Bonaire. 5hrs. out 3+hrs. back. Currently it's showing as $372 r/t for next spring - my travelsite doesn't extend fares 2 years out.
If you like things quieter, look at Westpunt - about 45mins from town Allwest Apt's gets good reviews - I've been to it but never stayed there. There's a couple of local restaurants but other than that you'd have to drive back to near town for most others. Or there's the Lodge Kura Hulanda - one of the leading Small Hotels of the World. I've been in a suite and one of their restaurants - it's very nice. Their staff is exceptional. Ocean Encounters West is onsite - 50 yards off their dock is Playa Kalki - IMO the best shore dive on Curacao. They also go to Watamula twice/wk. it's been named the Best boat dive.
Within 15-20 mins. are several other good shore dive sites, Playa Lagun, Jeremi, Porto Mari - others. All are easy entries off a sandy beach. Except for Jeremi all have their own diveop also. The diving on Curacao is mostly small stuff, although we had dolphins swim by our apt. twice in Lagun but not while we were in the water. Often saw turtles, eels, lots of smaller fish, octopus (at night), slipper lobster, other interesting stuff. At Varsenbaai we dove an 80' pontoon boat wreck, found a couple 6'+ moray eels, seahorses near the mooring ball, squid swimming near the dock and turtles feeding in the grass in 8' of water - on the same dive!! There's often turtles at Lagun also. A friend used to guide on Curacao, she said Snake Bay is one of the best. And you can dive with Dolphins at the Seaquarium thru Ocean Encounters - it's $200 pp. though. Admittedly it's not wild dolphin diving but it's still the highlight of my trip there.
Many Curacao natives are tri-lingual. Downtown navigating is fairly easy. Get a map for out west, street signs aren't their strong suit. Although every time we stopped for directions locals were very helpful. There is some crime mentioned, we never saw any. There's a deepwater port and refinery near downtown so it's expected.
Or if you go to BFC on Roatan, day trip to Anthony's Key and dive with the Dolphins there. It's cheaper also - around $125pp iirc.
