It could be fine tuned to breathe pretty well, thought it's not in the same league as the 109/156. I think it's a matter of geometry, i. e. the way the compressed gas is released into the housing.

I know you're being factious, but the poppet is still attached to the demand lever. I would bet you could clean that reg up and replace the 10 cent puck seat and it would breathe great.

awap,

You say it is a High Performance then? I thought it was pre HP. Thanks.

It was called "high performance" by the manufacturer. You don't think they'd call it "low performance" do you?

Sometimes they can breathe pretty well. I have one that works fine, another one that I can't seem to get stable at a decent cracking pressure. They're not in the league of the 109, but certainly better than many of the current plastic downstream unbalanced 2nd stages around.

Might at well try to tune it up. It's not like it's hard to take apart or anything. Any tips/tricks/mistakes I should be aware of? I didn't see anything on VDH for the 108.

One thing that does confuse me is that the exhaust valve seems to be inaccessible. It looks like someone took a screwdriver to the case in the past to try and get at the exhaust.

Your picture 1 shows the exhaust valve from the inside. The little stem you see has a small groove in it to hold it in place. Lubricate it with a generous amount of saliva or KY Jelly then by pinching as much of the stem as you can from the outside pluck it out. When it's time to reassemble it, again lubricate the stem, thread it back through the spider, and gently stretch the stem while you put pressure on the middle of the valve from the outside with a pencil eraser or your thumb.

You can get a service kit from VDH http://www.vintagedoublehose.com/in...=175#!/~/product/category=3500128&id=14647519

Hard to see but I stuck the screwdriver through to give some perspective.

By the way, sorry about the hijack Rene.

Are you sure about this? The exhaust outlet is round rather than oval. I thought this was on the older pre-HP 108s.
