Help! Ducomi Pier - Dumaguete

the reason why the dive site is destroyed is pretty simple.

It is the property of a private company and needs repair. No pier --> no business --> no money

there is absolutely nothing more behind.

I do understand that from their point, sad that they started that late to try to communicate .... at the end too late :-(

We have concerns here in Mindanao regarding dive sites threatened - again - by business.

It is a shame that good people put their hearts and souls into promoting/caring for dive sites only for the same to be destroyed by 'business' people who do not care the same for the environment.

I wonder if a 800 Mw coal fired power station was proposed to be located at Anilao might wake up a few people.

This is the issue people face here.

would oil refinery and oil storage tanks, oil tanker ships count as potential ecological nightmares ? You forgot to mention PG, you can see the beacons atop the oil storage tanks from sabang . Ask Jerseyguy what he thinks about them.

I'm curious to know what the two of you are actively doing to fight the power station and/or to protect/create reefs in Mindanao. Gen San Chris and John have invested significant time and money in artificial reefs... what has your contribution been, Andrew and Jane? Perhaps you can lead by example...

I wonder how many people who thank you for your post actually lobbied to protect Ducomi from development.

Divers from outside of the PI's will read this thread with dismay (especially since Ducomi was portrayed as the Philippine 'best'macro dive site - equivalant to Lembeh, Sulewesi).

For me, I thank you for doing everything in your power to protect this important place, but hold others in contempt for doing nothing when they could have 'stuck out their necks a 'bit' to do something.

To make this clear; I accuse many Filipino divers who are simply ineffectual regarding lobbying the government/local officials to protect their own environment.

IMO, Filipino divers can do much more to protect sites like Ducomi (Duma, whatever the name).

The fact for us is that they simply do not care - a sad indictment on Filipino divers.

However, as many divers in the PI's live in the most polluted city in the World, then I can understand why their expectations/actions to preserve the good dive sites here are low/lacking and mean nothing - just words.

Maybe these people (they know who they are) can say what they have done to protect/conserve/develop their environment for scuba diving in Manila or in other places?????

For my part (and I'm not Pinoy), I tried to lobby for a different company with a better conservation plan, and better trained divers to do the project.

You know what? I was going to supervise and document the entire procedure!

The owner went with the cheap option, as Rhoody has pointed out, and now the site is screwed.

No amount of local lobbying would have made a blind bit of difference, so please do a bit more research before you dive in here and start sling about unfounded - and offensive - allegations.

I am interested to know if - in your opinion - if the winning bidders did a good job.

You infer you would have done this better, but the 'cheaper option' was chosen.

Maybe you can say what your proposal was viz the 'cheaper option'.

For me, the 'cheaper option' from contractors will always be taken in the PI's, as this means more scope for graft.

The real point here is that a premium diving area located in a touristic place can be destroyed by the 'cheapest bid'.

And, very few seemed to get involved.

A similar situation exists in Gensan right now, and I know that the same thing will happen there.

IMO, a nice nuclear power station on Boracay would be good.
