Out of the BCD's listed I too would go with the Ranger. However I am another that would recommend a Back Pack and Wings setup. If I could go back to the beginning I would have started with one. I don't think it is just for tech divers IMO. It is a simple, comfortable, adaptable rig that can grow with you over the course of your diving.

Id think youd need to wear them in the water and just see what feels good, I drove my Honda Prelude once and I forgot about all the other cars. (long time ago)

Back PLATE/Wing Semantics, I know....

I voted Zeagle Ranger

Uhm, think this kind of polls would have radically different results if located on an Asian/European based forum as people is used to vote on what they know best (no matter if not ever seen any of the other items in the poll in order to compare). In my case, I've never seen a piece of zeagle gear around here ;) , so my vote would go to the mares (wich I myself I'm planning to buy) . Just my opinion.

Things to look for in a BC:

1. No padding - Padding requires additional weight, yet compresses at depth so it no longer cushions. Additionally, air in a BC lifts the BCs weight off your back rendering padding redundant. Padding also increases drag, making dives in current more difficult and increasing your air consumption.

2. No cummerbund - Cummerbunds increase drag.

3. Dump valve at the highest point of the BC. - Inflate the BC and hold it up as if you were wearing it at the surface. Is the dump valve at the highest point? If not, look for a different BC. If it is, turn it as if you were swimming in a prone position. Is there a dump valve at the highest point? A good BC will pass both tests. If the dump valve is not at the highest point, it will trap air, requiring contortions to dump all the air or additional lead. A nice extra is a right shoulder dump valve and dump valves at the bottom.

4. No fabric covering of the bladder. - These BCs are sometimes called "bladderless" or "single bladder BCs." The fabric covering creates drag in current.

If you get a BC with those features, you'll have a good BC regardless of its style. Style (vest, back inflate, horse collar or BP/wing) is much less important than a good design and attention to details.

ScottZeagle:
Based soley on the info you have given, I would choose the Zeagle Stiletto.

Best of luck with your search!

Scott

Youre not biased are you Scott?:)

what about this rig which i kinda mix n match to include some of the suggestion from what i have read so far...
- Cressi-Sub Mini 3 Gauge Console: 149.95
- Mares Vector 1000 BCD with MRS Weight Pockets, Black Large: 279.95
- Mares Rebel Octopus: 64.95
- Tusa Platina Adjustable Regulator, Black (RS-130): 174.95
i found the above items in LP...i already have a snorkel and a mask, plus a pair of old dive fins from a friend who's not using it anymore...i don't think there's an urgent need to get a wet suit to get started.

...my 2cents!
