Welcome Algal!
I live in La Jolla and dive here at least once a week from the beach. If you haven't done a cold water ocean dive before it would be a really good idea to take an intro dive with one of the local instructors. A first dive at the cove would not be advisable in January, even though this time of year has some of the best viz at the beaches the surf can be a little unpredictable. Do your first dive at La Jolla Shores, it's the easiest surf entry around and there are no underwater obstacles or kelp to get in your way while you get used to a 7mm wetsuit and the extra weight you'll need.
If you can't manage to set up a dive with an instructor then PM me and I would be happy to take you on a shallow dive at the shores. After you're comfortable with the gear changes the cove would be a great second stop. We also have some great local dive charters. Again, PM me and I'll share my favorites.
For some great info and pics of our local dive sites and denizens check out: http://www.divebums.com/main.html
By the way... our water isn't that cold out here! Surface temp is a balmy 59 degrees right now and temp at depth on my last dive was still a comfy 55. Not too bad right? :scared:
