I live in central Texas and its a good bet that two days after we get a strong norther, Coz will get a Norte.

This year our local weathermen are starting to get orgasmic about the strong El Nino and are forecasting a rough winter. If true, then this winter may not be typical.

Don't tell anyone, but if the port's closed you can always go over to the mainland for cenote dives. This might be the best 'back up' dive on the planet.

True, but if the port is legitimately closed for wind and sea conditions it might make for a bit of a rough ferry crossing.

Speaking of closures, this just in from the Cozume4You newsletter:

The 7th Ironman Cozumel will be held this weekend. On Sunday, the elite race is scheduled to start at 6:40 am at Chankanaab National Park. The entire downtown waterfront will be closed off so spectators can cheer on the competitors, and there will be road closures near the southern hotel zone. The sold out event, attended by 2,800 athletes and their supporters from all over the world will arrive on Cozumel Island for this long-awaited event.

Please don'r shoot the messenger. :D

How far in advance are closings due to events (rather than weather) announced? If I book airfare and hotel plus dive package taking a week off vacation for one of 2 dive trips I might get to make in a year, I want to dive!!! Other activities are a poor substitute.

If closure dates are announced far in advance, perhaps we can get a calendar of 'blackout' weeks when many people won't want to travel to Cozumel?

I have been in Cozumel on at least three occasions when the Ironman event was on including the last two years. It has never affected my ability to dive during the event. The airport experience is another story!

Unless it is a major hurricane, port closures due to nortes are usually only suspect the day before and are "generally" not confirmed until the morning of. Exceptions apply of course. But Cozumel conditions are very subject to change and there are no known "blackout" weeks.

I'm talking about events like the Ironman thing. My 1st cruise stop in Cozumel, the harbor closed while we were sitting in the dive boat, due to adverse weather. Disappointing, but understandable. Had it been closed unexpectedly due to some athletic competition, I'd have been ticked off. Weeks when events are scheduled that'll result in port closure are what I want identified well in advance. If I were planning a Cozumel trip, I'd pick a different week.

The sporting events have some definite lead time so those should be online somewhere. Google the name of the event for the next one.
