ScoobieDooo once bubbled...
A very accomplished doubles diver (OMS) had told me that a rather-accomplished marine biologist was diving the OMS 100# bungee wing with the IQ Pak and a single AL80 with no issues such as I experience. However, I experienced an awful lot of 'rolling' to the side when diving. I dove a 6# SS BP and a 6# Koplin weighted STA on my rig. My thinking was that the bungee was going to assist is keeping 'trapped air' t the minimum when diving the large wing.

So what could I have doing wrong then?

Do you mean rolling in that you had a load of weight on one side and it was pulling you down...or rolling b/c something wasn't attached properly....or rolling around of air in the wing?

Rolling as in right-side heavy - however, my weighting was been evenly distributed. 6# SS BP on my back with the 6# Koplin Weighted STA and a 4# weight on my front left and right side of my weightbelt. I dive dry. Single AL80. Jetfins.

Well,
That was my original thought until others have told me that they dove that exact same setup with a single and have no issues at all.

However, many say it can't be done. You can see how this has been a big problem...

Some said 'check your bungees and make sure that they are adjusted evenly from the L side to the R side. I have done this.
Sadly, these issues have left with with a rather bad taste in my mouth for BPS and wings.

I really didn't want to have to buy two wings - as at some point along the way I'd like to dive twins - even if a ways off.

Also, the weighetd STA will prove to be troublesome for packing my BC to travel as well. Having a 6# STA in additional to a 6# BP packs rather heavily - even though the STA isue could be fixed rather easily.

You need to compare apples to apples. Try diving a jacket BC with 100# of lift and see how that works for you. The dynamic instability is what's killing you. With the setup you described, a 27# Halcyon or 30# Oxycheq wing would be enough lift. I dive with a 36# Halcyon and have had no issues. The weighted STA is also not necessary if you have an integrated STA.

You, quite simply, did not use the right equipment for the job. A 100# wing is twice the lift needed for most divers with double LP104s and a stage bottle. Why would you want that much trapped air moving around for a single Al80 which is only -2 at the beginning of the dive!? Ya gots ta think this stuff through rationally.

I don't think a DR TP should be lumped in with jacket style BCs. Although the TP lacks a bp, it is "back - inflated" so you can achive good trim. I dive a bp now with my doubles, but, if I get another singles set up I would consider a tp, as I find them very comfortable. While the tp's quick releases may make it unsuitable for deep diving, I think they are fine for shallow singles diving.

So I guess there is no 'one wing for all' applications. Bummer.

I guess I'd be better of stashing the wing for when the time comes for twins and get a single tank wing for singles. Still be cheaper than buying a jacket BC or selling thw doubles wing and taking a loss...

But let me say this with all honesty...

A wing for both singles and doubles is a kluge. It just doesn't work - it may appear handy, but it incorporates the worst features of both worlds.

I know - I have tried to dive them. I ended up E-Baying my original Deep Outdoors 40 lb wing 'for singles and light doubles' and getting an Oxycheq single wing from COVCI, and I love it. No dynamic instability, ease of use, very stable in the water.

I'll probably get a doubles wing from Oxycheq as well.

Remember those really ugly cars with pickup truck beds that came out in the 80's? That's what a combination wing is - it appears handy and innovative at first glance, but then we realize what a bad idea it was.

Boogie711,
I agree...

Unfortunately I have found one can't use one wing for all. It'd be nice, but it just doesn't work well.

I agree with Soggster and boogie....with 100#s you have way way way too much lift for a single AL80....unless you're towing around an anchor for some reason....but that's just silly.

I was under the impression you were diving a smaller wing when you had the "rolling issue". Rent, borrow, beg, or steal a singles wing of around 30 pounds lift, remove the bungees and see what happens.
