Interested to gauge people views and reactions to Halcyon equipment and the revolution of DIR!! I am not a DIR diver but use a halcyon equipment and have incorporated some of the DIR techniques into my own personal diving.

I dive with the Eclipse 40 Wing with a SS backplate but switch to the Aluminium when travelling. I have enjoyed so many dives much more with the freedom and comfort of this device. An excellent piece of kit!!
 
Thats good to know I am currently up grading my equipment. you know that beginner diver thing I did "I wish I knew then what I know now" up till now I have only dove inland lakes and tropics, I would like to start wreck diving this year and my aqualung jacket style is just not going to cut it. I have been looking at the halcyon as it has been recomended by alot of divers. It can get a little confusing on what style wing I would need. I am probably not going 2 tanks but would like to venture down below 100'. I was looking at the pioneer S.S. back plate 27Lb lift think I should go with more lift?
 
A Pioneer 27lb would be fine with one tank, but you might to calculate your bottom time with one tank below 100'. With proper gas management you really don't have much bottom time with one tank. If you're going deep have the tools to make the trip truly worthwhile and stay a bit. Good thing with a BP/W you can just swap out wings.

27# - 30# wing will provide adequate lift for the majority of single tank divers at recreational depths.

My diving is recreational weenie diving at recreational depths.

* Drysuit = more weight
* Heavy DSLR 2-strobe cam rig
* E8-130 Tank
* 18w HID
* Turtle Fins

I'm confident a 27# wing when full would likely float my upper lip in flat seas. Maybe.

I dive a 36# at present with no worries.

* Junk in pockets - dive alert, mask, shears, spool, wet notes, etc.

I'm confident a 27# wing when full to bursting would likely float my upper lip in flat seas. Maybe.

Thanks I have never 2 tanked before it looks like another class is in order. Thats if I can even walk with 2 tanks.
 
Mccabe, Just a quick question for you. You said you have an SS backplate, but you use an Aluminum one when you travel. Why not just use the Aluminum one all the time? I ask because I travel in order to dive, so I'm wondering if there's any drawback to just having the aluminum backplate?
 
I love the eclipse and agree with you about the freedom of movement etc. I think they make quality gear and I have found lots of applications for the long hose. Also, I like the fact that i hardly need any weight now. I do find the straps cut into my arms and cut off circulation on hike to shore dives. if I did a lot of shore dives (I don't) I would choose a different harness. We have one dive where you have to don your gear and hike it up an embankment and its tough. However, Of course, it becomes totally weightless in the water.
