OkieDivers:
I had problems with my hair getting in the way during my confined water dive. My hair is kinda long and I have some shorter layers around my face which would get loose from my ponytail and get in my face. One of the DM's at the confined dive was a woman with layered hair and she highly recommended the Scuba Do: Rag. Although, they were rather pricey for such a small piece of fabric ($35-yikes). I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and purchased one before my o/w certification, and I was glad I did. I have only used it a few times and have had no problems. I didn't even have a problem with mask removal/replacement. They do come in different types of fabrics and I was fortunate that my LDS carries them and I was able to try on several. I found that the more stretchy fabric seemed to stay more secure. The Dee-Rags are very simular and are much cheaper, but I was in a situation that I needed to do something and I really didn't have time to order it. Scuba DoRags has a website:

Hope that helps![/QUOTE

I think that this is a very wonderful idea, but I have a very small problem and need your help in it. What the heal is Scuba Do: Rag. All that I know that it is something to do with hair. I really need to know because I want to buy one for my wife.

It is a piece of fabric that is made to fit on your head covering the hair and then it ties in the back to keep it snug. It also has a piece of the fabric that hangs down a little in the back and it's like a little pouch that you can stick your hair/ponytail down in. I have found that as long as you have your hair pulled back in a ponytail or braided you really don't need to use that part and that part is a little bit of a hassle. I did notice that the Dee-Rags were mentioned again after my post and I would recommend that you check out both websites. They are both very similar and the Dee-Rags are considerably cheaper (less than 1/2, I think). I believe that your wife would be pleased with either. I personally wouldn't want to dive without one. Also, they come in many different colors and patterns, so you could pick something to go with your wife's personality.

Hope that answers your question.
Good Luck!

OK, I know this is a kind of old thread but after reading others' comments, I had to add mine.
First, I have to respond to the "ascending and on the surface it is recommended to remove the mask and leave it around the neck" comment. WOW. Maybe this is taught by some but I thoroughly agree with scubabunny and DivingGal and leave my mask on.
First, no need to worry about it (or my hair) and second, I HAVE been tossed off the ladder twice. The first time I caught myself (lots and lots of bruises). The second time I just fell back in the water, put my fins back on (cause they were on my wrists not handed to the guy on the boat which is how I was taught for just this reason, but very few others seem to be), swam back and climbed back up. No problems.

On the hair thing, I do as someone else said: "mini pony tails. I put a band every inch or so starting from the top of my head." I have long, layered curly hair and this works great. I also use a slap strap. I sometimes have difficulty getting this tight. I have learned to tighten the non-dominant hand side a lot so the dominant hand side has room for adjustment. On more than one occasion I have had the dominant hand side all the way tight and had to try to tighten the other. ARGH!

One of my other dive pals french braids her very long, straight hair after putting VO5 all in it. She insists that helps hold the strap and protects her hair from the wind and water and salt...whatever works!

I absolutely hate wearing my neoprene hood. Maybe a lycra hood wouldn't be bad but the opening has to be bigger or something so I won't feel claustrophobic. Lost one dive with the neoprene hood because my dive light hit my mask on the down rope (high chop and current) and could not get the mask to seal back.

Wow...I had a lot to say!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the neoprene hood. It blows people away that I don't wear one in Monterey (though the day in, I think, May, that it was 48 degrees, I grumbled, but put it on).

In my OW class, I had trouble with my mask strap ripping out the hair at my temples, so I got the neoprene mask strap (got a body glove one at Sport Chalet for nine bucks). I like it. With my hair loose, the strap had a greater tendency to slide, plus I had the somewhat painful experience of bumping my head on a rock and getting a starfish tangled in my hair.

I tried a ponytail but with the surgey salt water, I ended up with the band and then a tight rat's nest by the time I was done diving. I didn't care that it looked nasty, but it meant I usually had to cut the (soft) band out of my hair and use half a bottle of conditioner and rip out half the hair to ever get it managable.

The french braid was the wonder tool!! Texture to the hair so the strap doesn't slide around, but no 'knot' (bun, pony, whatever) to get in the way, keeps the hair out of my face, and out of the indiginous marine life, and when I'm done diving, it's easy to unwind my tangle free hair and I get a nice curl without setting foot in a salon.

Hi,

I used to have the same problem, I also used all suggestions (including a bandana, a sort of cap shower). But now I just let my hair loose, it's the best solution.
Enjoy your dive!

At my LDS they have a strap called a slap strap. It's just a soft fabric that wont tangle your hair in it. It completely replaces the rubbery one and it gives you a nice coushin in the back of your head.

I also have very long hair and my boyfriend wont let me cut it so I have to pull it up in a ponytail too. Try making the ponytail at the very lowest point on your neck or the very highest on your head(without making you look like an alien) and I hope it helps.

Ladies I didn't read all this, but if I repeat something just ignore - we have young lady that dives with us and she wears a ball cap - backwards - first time I saw it I was like, "What the HELL!" But it works great. She buys a cheap fitted hat, wears it until it dissolves and throws it away.....she looks cute as hell wearing it, too.
