I also have very long, copious hair. I braid it before diving, but that's rarely enough by itself.
I use a lycra hood (from Divers Direct) and a mask Marsoop. Also, I don't keep a snorkel on my mask. All of those things save tremendous problems.
Covering your head with lycra is a really good thing to do.
Then if you use some seriously good hair conditioner after diving, it will help with the management of your mane. I prefer Nexxus Humectress or Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture. Tough conditions call for tough solutions.

I have fine, long hair and it makes diving dificult.
i can't wear a ponytail, as soon as i get's wet, the band falls out. So i've started just wearing my hair down. It works pretty well. I also have one of the neoprene strap covers which keeps the strap from getting tangled in hair.

I will suggest that if you can keep a ponytail in, make it low and wear your mask strap over it. When you pull down your mask, just leave it over your ponytail.

I do use a bandanna to cove my head when I am out of the water. It can be folded in a triangle ... ...go to walmart or wherever and by one for about $1 to $4, they come in lots of colors and designs. Also, think of this, when you surface and take your mask off, the bandanna can come off completely, unless it is tied so tight that you loose blood circulation. It does work though.

I have trouble with a bandanna worn biker-style getting air bubbles caught in it and floating off my head with just the knot caught under the mask strap. I french braid my layered just-past-shoulder length hair, then fold the bandana like a headband and tie it just across my hairline and behind my ears, tying it at the back of my neck under the braid. It's very secure, and creates a "no wispies" zone wide enough to keep them out of my mask and off my snorkel keeper. Plus, my hubby/buddy always knows his wife is the diver in the pepto pink headband :)

I have long hair also and find it a pain to dive with. The best solution I have is to either french braid it or put it in mini pony tails. I put a band every inch or so starting from the top of my head. I also use cheap barrettes to keep to wisps out. The other thing I have tried is the fabric hair wraps that look like a head band. That keeps all of the little hairs from getting into my mask. I would agree with everyone that says to just keep trying new things. The worst thing for my is to let it go free though. Four hours in the shower later with conditioner is not my ideaa of a good time. :)

I also have bangs and layed hair. I use a bra-strap head band to get those pieces away from my face. I have a whole bunch that I found at clairs or afterthoughts ( the head bands have bra strap kind of look and are adjustable). So wearing that and my mask strap that I got from divers direct keep my hair under control.

The best fix I have found so far is a baseball cap. When I took my DIR F course, my instructors hair was very long. He wore a baseball cap, which I had never tried. Since then, I've used it and it works well. I just turn it around backwards and no issues. Originally I changed out my mask strap to a soft strap that would not tangle in my hair, but a braid or pony tail always came loose during the dive and my hood in cold water pulls my hair something awful. I just purchased a lycra cap to try for hood diving but for now, I like the baseball cap. Besides, you have an instant fix for dive head afterwards. Hahaha

I have very long hair but have no problems with it. I braid it but, the most important thing is that I use a neoprene cap. The cap has a couple of advantages. It holds my hair and bangs out of the way of the mask. It keeps my mask strap easy to adjust. and most importantly, it help keeps me warm. I pretty much only dive in tropical waters so real insulation is not a problem (like needing a hood). But that little bit of neoprene on the head really makes a difference. It may not win any fashion contests, but you'll like how it handles your hair. I haven't dived without one in a whole lotta years.

This may seem odd coming from a guy :11: but understand I have two mothers, three sisters, two sister in-laws and two daughters. At this point I can do a french braid with the best of them. Anyway, My daughter snorkles a lot. However, I have taught her to do so following the "rules" as if she was diving. (She's not old enough yet). Her hair sounds a lot like yours. The solution I found is the I Dream of Jeannie look. Pony tail on top of her head with the extra back through the holder. Just an idea....

I had problems with my hair getting in the way during my confined water dive. My hair is kinda long and I have some shorter layers around my face which would get loose from my ponytail and get in my face. One of the DM's at the confined dive was a woman with layered hair and she highly recommended the Scuba Do: Rag. Although, they were rather pricey for such a small piece of fabric ($35-yikes). I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and purchased one before my o/w certification, and I was glad I did. I have only used it a few times and have had no problems. I didn't even have a problem with mask removal/replacement. They do come in different types of fabrics and I was fortunate that my LDS carries them and I was able to try on several. I found that the more stretchy fabric seemed to stay more secure. The Dee-Rags are very simular and are much cheaper, but I was in a situation that I needed to do something and I really didn't have time to order it. Scuba DoRags has a website:

Hope that helps!
