Ladie Diver, same suggestion that I had. I have also seen people cut up a 3 mil hood. The cut out the face bigger and cut out holes for the ears. I f the hood has a bib it gets cut out too. The neoprene mask strap cover works for me also, and I have short hair. When I'm not in the pool with students I do not wear the cover as it slides too easy down the back of the head.

LadyDiver...where did you get that? What company makes it? I live in the tropics, so I don't need a hood per say...but I also have looonnnnggg hair, and I would LOVE a lycra hood or something similar! I think other women here would love it also!

As for the mask thing...I know the prefered way of wearing your mask is around your neck..but I keep my mask on constantly until I can stand (either on a boat or in knee deep water) part of that is because I wear contacts, and have have almost lost them on occassion..and also because if I do happen to get knocked down by a wave, I want to be able to see, and not have to fight to find my mask and put it back on my face, then clear it in order to see to find my reg. Plus, it does save alot of wear and tear on your hair. (hey...that even rhymed!!)

I use a "slap strap", the neoprene thing that replaces the mask strap entirely. I tried the one that just covers the silcone strap, and my hair still got tangled in the strap where it hooks into the mask. So, I replaced it entirely. The only problem I have with it is the velcro strip that attatches to the mask has a tendency to run the back of my ears sometimes. I have a habit of wearing my strap too low on the back of my head...but to me it feels more secure that way.

But, I'm really interested in that hood thing!!!

Hi Scubabunny,

I got the cap at my regular dive shop. I don't remember which manufacturer it came from and I can't even look because I removed the little tag in the back. :(

Next time I go to the shop, I will take a look and find out who made it and let you know.

It really is the best remedy I have found for the long hair thing. I hate wearing a regular hood and the cap even helps a bit in cold conditions, although not nearly as much as a neoprene hood.

Cheers,

Originally posted by ScubaBaby but when ascending and on the surface it is recommended to remove the mask and leave it around the neck.

Recommended by who? I've never heard of that recommendation. Only thing I've ever heard about the position of the mask is to "don't put it on top of the head (like you would for sunglasses) as this could be interpreted as a sign of panic".

Couldn't have said it better.

My O/W with PADI everytime I took the mask off or didnt put it under my chin when I surfaced, I was told off by my instructor.

He said that PADI recommend you put it under your chin in fear of lossing it when you surface with waves.

Trust me, if you dive in cold water, you WILL keep the mask on until you reach the shore or the boat.

But as everyone said it, you should keep it in the neck while not diving.

Just for information, how much is the neoprene "slap strap" and which company make it?

Got it. Yes I was told something similar - was told, that if you were at the surface and wished to remove the mask not to place it on top of the head (panic sign). But as I wear contacts, I leave mine firmly in place until I'm out of the water.

Another good point for those of us who dive in the "cooler" temperatures. As for neoprene straps around here: replacement $15 CDN, slip cover $13 CDN (variety of manufacturers

as "The PADI Way" (around your neck) to wear your mask when it's not on your face.

Is it a good idea to wear it around your neck when it's not on? Yes! Is it something that is a PADI requirement? No!

Just for the record...

Lady Diver, would tyhat be a 3 mil cap? If it was it is made by a company in Ontario and distributed as Squid Cap. It looks like a baseball cap. They are kind of cool.

Hi there,

I found an example of the cap on O'Neill's website. They show a couple of examples but I am not sure if that is who made the cap I have but it looks pretty close.

Runs about $30 USD
