So the Weather Channel is airing the shipwrecks of Lake Superior. The divers are saying visibility is 100 feet. They showed some 200 year old wrecks that are in 20 foot of water. Wow, I got to go and dive this place. :D They talked about the Edmond Fitzgerald but I think that was in 500 feet of water. It looks like November is not the time to dive though.:(

I just posted a thread about best times of the year to dive Lake Superior. Let me know when you want to go. I'm planning a trip for next year. Just starting inquiries about timing, temps, undergarments, etc.

I've been to Whitefish Point the last couple of years and it's a great place to dive. One of my favorite dives we did in 2006 was on the Saturn. It's in less than 20 feet of water and close to shore. We did it as a third dive. It's pretty cool to be able to see the wreck from the boat while suiting up. It's recently discovered as well. You don't use up much gas on this dive either. Here is a link to some pix from Whitefish Point. The Saturn is towards the end of the slide show.

I've also dove the Munising area and it's great as well.

Diving Lake Superior is fantastic and the Up North Michigan experience cis hard to beat if you like wilderness.

Check out the Scuba Diving Magazine articles on Great Lakes Diving.
I was on the Upper Peninsula last September working mostly out of Marquette and St. Ignace. Diving was pretty good and lots to do in the area when you are not diving, especially if you like doing outdoor activities. Great people, excellent services, and diving that has to be one of the best kept secrets around. All I can say is wow.
This time of year most of the dive operations are closed or on reduced hours. Be patient when contacting the folks.

I will be 2 weeks up 'north' on the Lakes and poss. 1 week on the St. Lawrence Aug. 08'.

The December issue of Scuba Diving has an article we did on Thunder Bay, Alpena, Michigan. The diving there is superb. They only used one of my photos but I'm currently working on putting together a large slide show on the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Should have it on my website within a week.

Excellent pictures. Makes me want to go tomorrow.:D

I've never dove Superior, I do 90% of my diving in Erie, but have always wanted to check out Superior, I've heard a lot of good things. I'd love to get in on an organized trip to dive Superior.

My pleasure.

The funny thing is the first time I dove Whitefish, two years ago, we were doing a wreck, the Vienna, which sits at about 140-150 fsw. I had heard how cold Superior is so I kept waiting for the big freeze as we headed down the line. We hit the deck at 125 fsw and I still hadn't felt a thermoclime. I checked my gauges and was shocked to see that both read 60 degrees. Back on the boat everyone had about the same reading and this was in the first weekend of October. We could only figure that the lake had turned due to the remnants of a hurricane which blew through the Great Lakes. What a nice surprise that was.

Needless to say last year on the Vienna it was a more typical 42 on the bottom.
