I'm honestly not sure, that's just what the dive doc said. I'm guessing that the problem's more with coming up than with going down. Hemophillia might make a diver more sensitive to DCS.

Do you think I would have the same problem in Cozumel, or is Coz all shallow diving? Where's better?

We went to Cozumel last year and stayed/dove with Scuba Club. Most of our dives were at about 55 feet with the exception of Columbia Reef 95' and Palancar Caves 91'.

This year we went to Roatan and most of our dives were around 50 feet. We had our kids (12 & 16) with us so we were also looking for shallower dives. Our original destination was Bonaire but Hurricane Ivan messed up our connection and Roatan was our second choice.

You should go to Little Cayman. The wall at Bloody Bay (Great Wall, Randy's Gazebo etc) is sheer from 25/30 feet so at 60 feet you can be 30 feet down the wall. Plus the diving is better all round than Grand Cayman (even EEnd).

One more question, I've been looking into staying at the Reef Resort on East End if I go to Grand Cayman. I have family members that don't dive but really enjoy snorkeling. I haven't heard many good things about shore snorkeling at East End, is it really not as good as Seven Mile Beach? Is it possible to snorkel off any of the hotel beaches like the ones at the Reef or Tortuga Club and how's the viz?

I thought the snorkeling off the Reef resort was nice enough. Viz was good and I saw plenty of stuff, including a couple turtles and some reef squid. Lots of turtle grass areas for stuff to hide. I saw lots of people snorkeling at Tortuga club, though mostly near the dock which got wiped out.

Hmmm....
I'll throw in a relatively experienced opinion on East End. In truth it is NOT a big animal destination. OCCASIONAL sightings of turtles are the most common bigger critter. As others have said reef sharks are sometimes sighted at THE MAZE (maybe 1 in 4 dives there) and other big stuff should be considered a blessing.

Shore snorkeling in East End greatly varies according to the wind strength and direction. Winter months are more likely to bring stronger winds and/or northeast winds which can blow out several of the nice snorkeling spots on the north shore. Less is available on the south shore because much of that shoreline is ironshore and entry/exit is difficult.

Depths... I actually like the shallow sites on East End better than the walls. Varied topography is the draw for me, but if your buoyancy is out of synch it could be a real problem if you have a bleeding disorder. Unfortunately impacts are not all that uncommon, particularly when there is a bit of water movement and/or surge. The wall tops out at 45 to 70 feet on East End, depending upon the site. Shallow dives are typically to a max of 50 or 60 feet.
